Hard fold vs retractable tonneau

I still haven’t pulled the trigger on my next cover, and now I’m stepping back from the retrax simply because it takes up so much space in an already short bed. It’s also twice the price of the MX4 which seems crazy to me. I also don’t know that I like the Lomax trifold as it requires connecting parts to the roof of your truck.

So I’m back leaning towards the MX4 or the Ultra Flex. I’m more familiar with BAK since that’s what I currently have, so I may just go with it again in the latest version.

What do you have to connect to the roof of your truck for a Lomax/Weathertech??? Its just a few clamps on your bedside rails to add the cover rails and the cover snaps on that.

What would be considered the most secure cover? I'm in a scenario with theft on long expeditions with tools and other items. I would not want to unload and reload each morning at a different hotel stop. Is it the Diamond Back?
I got the Diamondback because of its strength, security and versatility. It has two aluminum rods that extend under the lip of the bed. Most of the others you can pop open with a screwdriver. The light duty you can put 400# on it and stop it down with the provided cleats, I put on some extra cleats as well. If you need to put in taller items it takes 4min 36 seconds to remove the front and or back wing. The only Pia part is the center strip which has the clamps holding it to the bed. What do you have to connect to the roof of your truck for a Lomax/Weathertech??? Its just a few clamps on your bedside rails to add the cover rails and the cover snaps on that.
I just researched it a little more, and you're right in that it does not appear to require any major "attachments" or the physical structure of the truck. I'm still leaning towards one of those trifolds over the rollup (so either the MX4, Ultraflex, Lomax, etc.).

Thank you. What made you go with the split in the middle model? I was considering the one that just completely lifts up in one piece. The tri door is my last choice. I do not need the HD just need security at night during Baja trips when it’s parked at hotels and restaurants

I have run both a MX4 and a Lomax and liked both of them. I liked how easy it was to remove the Lomax but I like the ability to fold the MX4 up against the cab. There are pros and cons to each.

It all comes down to personal preference on if you'd rather remove to use the bed space or fold it against the cab.

Its great, I've had it for two years.... but it wont flip up (like the backflip) and give you access to the bed... maybe thats what you were thinking would require additional attachments above the bedsides?

Initial install ~10 minutes. It only takes about 1 minute to fold it up, climb into the bed and remove the top though if you need to leave it at home while you use the entire bed.

The confusion maybe due to the fact Lomax makes a few different trifold models. The one that doesn't flip up against the cab and has the quick removal is the Lomax Folding Hard Cover and the one that requires the attachments on the cab of the truck is the Lomax Stance (pictured below)

I really am second thinking the Extang encore and going with the renegade. love the bolts on to except a tent. my only issue is the extra lbs. does anyone have experience with the renegade?

It allows you easy access to front or rear. I started with there deep tool box too but had to remove it when I finally saved enough for my CargGlide. Look at their web site, they have several different configurations. It was the most secure and strong of all the ones I looked at, you can walk on it or put your tent on it. The HD model supports #1200. You can put two ATV‘s on it

I have the UnderCover Trifold with the Line-X coating and I love it. It does let in a little water but not enough to worry about.
