Hail Damaged Raptor

Guys,

I would like your opinions on purchasing a brand new hail damaged Raptor. After the huge storm in the Midwest, my brother-in-law (car salesman) called and said he could get me a Raptor with moderate hail damage for around $35K. The damage hammered the hood, roof, bed and one side of the bed rail and fender. My body man says that the fix would be way less than $20k, but he thinks it will push the resale way down.

Along with that, I am leaving for a two year assignment with the military, so I have the time to fix it piece by piece, and my Pop will let me store it for free (payments in cruising the beast).

Thoughts?

Well everything thing except the roof is fiberglass. Aftermarket stuff isn't too expensive. Sounds like a good deal

I've had an suv get hail damage twice. No broken windows. But well damaged hood doors and roof.

Fixing it each time was about $4.5k.

You want to see the truck first. Mirrors are expensive if you need a new one. I would NOT fix the roof. You can't see it any how.

I'd also negotiate the price down further. The dealership already got paid for the "loss in value" by their insurance company.

How do they figure $20 in damage? Put up some pics. I'd bet u can re-skin the roof and bedside and get the whole truck painted for less than that.

He said way less than $20k. I took it as the raptor msrp is $55k.

Definitely seems like something to pursue IMO. If you are on a budget and want a new Raptor, this seems like a good deal.

I also would look into doing a wrap in a color you want, may be cheaper and you could make something that is unique.

I'll see what I can do for pics for you guys. As far as negotiating with the dealership, we'll see how that goes. My brother-in-law says the adjuster is a bit behind but they are doing some kind of blanket on most cars (depending on the damage), so I'll have to wait until he gives me the go ahead.

What about resale value later on...will this stick with the truck forever (on carmax and such)?

I'm sure it will stick with the truck. However, hail damage I'd all cosmetic. Shouldn't really be any deprecated value.

Might be a hard deal to pass up especially if you can work him down to say 30K.

Well, I got (light) hail damage on my next-to-brand new Raptor a couple summers ago. Only had 2,500km on it. Just about made me sick as I was driving when it happened. Only ended up with 1/2 dozen small dents in the roof but still ****** me off when I think about it. And I didn't get to enjoy the nice savings off the MSRP as a result!

If you can save $20k on the price of a new one then I'd say go for it! Even if it does affect resale (I don't think it will), it's not going to be anywhere close to $20k worth. I would bet that you can buy the truck, fix it, and make a nice profit selling it right away or fix it, drive for a few years and sell it for what you've got into it.
