Nick- not sure what you mean... I drove the first 300 miles on the oil from delivery and then changed to Mobil 1 before the long road trip. I didn't change it to specialized break-in oil since I was going to be piling a few thousand miles on in a very short time.

I'd love some more thoughts on Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil. With all due respect to Haynes Offroad who is a dealer, is Amsoil significantly superior to Mobil 1 and worth the added cost?

Sorry if that was a bit confusing. I let my truck break-in to about 1000-1500 miles to get rid of the "break-in" oil (from the factory). I was thinking that 300 miles might not be enough for the engine to fully break-in and if you'd considered changing it again after your road trip.

Thanks for clarifying. I hadn't considered another oil change right away, but you're right that it might be the ideal. By the way, I removed the entire front skid plate for the oil change rather than trying to work through that tiny access hole. I love the way the drip tray under the oil filer is engineered... kinda like a luge track for oil!

What about oil filters? I see that there's a Ford Racing filter available. Wondering if it's worth picking a few up.

To keep from making a mess and not having to deal with having to remove the entire skid plate every time, I use some aluminum foil and lightly wrap it around that little tray to extend length of the tray to below the skid plate and into my drain pan. Keeps the skidplate nice and tidy as well.

As far as oil filters, I believe Ford Racing offers one, but I've been happy with the Motorcraft filters from Wal-Mart or O'Reilly's for less than $5.

In short, the answer is yes it is well worth it. I'm not gonna try and "sell" you on it, but just provide some facts and MY personal experience without getting too much into the science.

Mobile 1 is a good oil, it is better than most other off the shelf oils you can get. But through independent testing, Amsoil has ALWAYS came out significantly ahead of mobile 1, in the lab and in the field. You can lookup for yourself mobile 1 vs amsoil test results, don't take my word for it.

Mobile 1 is "designed" for 15,000miles, where Amsoil's signature series (top tier) is "designed" for drain intervals of 25,000 miles. What does that tell you about quality of oil?

Just like anything else, people are going to have they're opinions, and when it comes to the age old mobile 1 vs. Amsoil war, it's no different. But the trend is going toward Amsoil much more now. I've used several different brands of oil including mobile 1, in several different applications, and I've always had better success with Amsoil. I've seen a huge improvement with the raptors 6.2 motor. Amsoil Runs smoother, no ticking, knocking or any other little sounds That I was getting from mobile 1 and the factory fresh oil.

Hope this doesn't sound like a rant or anything because it's not... I just get carried away typing. :ROFLJest:

Thanks for your thoughts. Very well stated and helpful info! After the pricetag on the truck, it makes perfect sense to me to maintain it the best I can.

Welcome!

Outerbanks is on my drive to bucket list.

You should definitely go... it's one of my fav places. Very laid back and relaxing, and you can drive on the beach in a number of areas that aren't very populated.
