I have a 801a, so without the tailgate release, i am out of luck?

Yes, unfortunately you are. this will only work on the 802As with the powered tailgate release.

If I hadn't wired up mine already per forum instructions and done it all to my obsessed nature of wiring (soldering everything, using an add-a-fuse to get power, tucking everything), I would have absolutely bought this and supported a fellow NC'er!
