I am considering a "Functional Cowl Induction Hood". Always try to plan out my mods before I get too involved. I have a Roush Supercharger and its intake is horrible. It draws air from inside the finder well and has an open filter element. I have seen a non functional cowl hood on a Raptor. I believe the "real deal" may serve to raise where the engine draws it's air, however I am unsure if it would still fill with mud and water. I've done significant research and have seen mixed reviews on such a mod on other off-road forums. It appears they recommend a tradition snorkel, but I believe a traditional snorkel would look incredibly tacky on a Raptor. One noticeable benefit of the intakes relocation for the cowl hood, would be a second battery could be installed in the engine bay. Do any other fellow Raptor owners have opinions, recommendations?

a secondary battery would be a HUGE benefit. Not only that, but I think it looks cool. Anytime you can get heat out of the engine bay, the better you engine will perform and the longer it will last.

I don't have any experience on trying to install a cowl on a Raptor, but I say go for and let us know how you go about it.

Is there a kit? Or do you have to do it homegrown?

Also, what are the other black spots on the hood on the photos above?

Yeah it'd be a 100% custom mod. Most of my mods are either completely or partially custom. Working on sliders now, actually.

The Raptor with the cowl hood in the pictures has a weld in Chevy cowl, I believe. I've read a thread about it before. Most of the work was done by SDHQ. Appears to have basically locking hood pins. Maybe that's what you meant by "What are the other black spots on the hood on the photos above?". I've seen them installed in other threads.

I think that hood is on a 5.4 but you could make any scoop functional, a lot of aftermarket ones have ducting molded into the fiberglass hood. I say make your own, that way it will be exactly how you want it.

It'd need some way to divert water away from the intake in a downpour or hauling a** through mud, water, etc. I've got a lot of ideas, almost too many to pinpoint the best.

Let me be the 1st to rain on this parade. I loved the cowl induction on my 70 Chevelles. But that was a different time. And I wasn't blasting thru large puddles & streams, routinely.

Now you need to provide a run of stable air flow for the mass air flow sensor. I don't know how to get that in a practical cowl induction.

It would be nice if you could come up with one. Good luck.

I have changed to drawing the air from near the SVT side vent... You will get some intake noise but you will not get any water.

The cowl on that truck was not welded in, it was molded in with fiberglass and the color matched to the rest of the truck. All of the aftermarket work that you see in the pictures was done here in house. Yes they are hood pins, they are called aero latches.

The white truck was a 6.2 with a procharger.

My plan with the new glass coming for the front. I figured with the extra room of the fenders it may make it easier. Plus its kinda like a snorkel.
