Would a 4ft antenna work alright? Seems a bit much for what may be encountered on a trail.

I use my dual band antenna on trail runs all the time(50 inches long). For the TRR I use a little 1/4 wave antenna because my antenna doesn't have this feature
("Threaded collar fold-over hinge included, it will not slip up and fold-over by itself while traveling at highway speed.") I have now fixed it.

Antenna length depends on the type of antenna, it's a base plane antenna or not. If it is, it needs to be trimmed to length to match your frequency utilization

Not all antennas will need to be cut. You can get ones that are pre tuned so you don't have to mess with them. If you don't have a proper SWR meter (radio shack one will not work) you won't know how far off you are.

Handheld won't reach out as far, but for the amount I will be using this radio, I greatly prefer not permanently mounting anything. I ran a CB in my car for about 10+ years. It was handy, but not enough for me to permanently mount something I'll use even less than that.

Btw- ordered a radio from Trey today...he is going to program all the frequencies for all the runs and ship it out to me...I went with Trey's recommendation, the Baefong, however you spell it,...so thanks Trey for your help...
