I had taken my family and our boat to the lake for a short little trip on the water. We were done playing and ready to leave. I backed the truck down the ramp, til the rear tires were just barely in the water, put it in park, set the brake, shut it off, and went back to my wife who was holding the boat at the bank.
She went back to the truck and waited next to it, while I idled over to the trailer. Before I got the boat to the trailer, the truck started sliding down the ramp more into the water. She was not in the truck - she was standing next to it. Nobody was touching it. I have no idea why it sat there fine for 10 minutes and then slid in.
She opened the door and hit the brake, but the wheels were locked and sliding. I jumped off the boat and pushed her out of the way, trying to get it started to pull out of the water, but it went very fast. The water level was over the steering column as fast as I could even get to it. I turned the key once and nothing - everything electrical was screwed up already. Had to get a wrecker with a long powerful winch to pull it out.
I'll post some pics later, but it went completely under. Adjuster called today and said to plan on it being a total loss. I called the dealer I ordered from & he's looking for a truck like mine now. I've felt sick since it happened.
It changed the way I will launch and load boats from now on. First off, our kids are small, and when launching would have been in a car seat. Never again will they be in the truck during either process. I will also put the truck in 4WD and probably lock the axle when on the ramp.
Anyway, I hope I can find a truck to take to the run. I appreciate the offers for a co-driver and might have to take somebody up on it. I have 2 friends who were eager to come with me, and they're probably out of luck if I don't get a truck. It just really makes me sick. I had done a bunch of little things to mine (paint protection, etc) that won't be replaceable.
