Forward collision warning sensor issues

Just to add one more thing, mine only has issues after driving for an hour and a half or more. Not sure why it does this. Works fine up until then. It is a pain in the ass when on the highway driving for 3 hrs.

Yep. I have the tow hook license plate holder that I put on when running through this small town that likes to stop you for no front plate. It covers that area and causes the warning.

Has anyone else had issues with their forward collision warning sensor this winter? I have put over 2k miles on my wife’s truck this last week. The first time I had an issue was during a 2 hour drive through constant rain. Near the end of the drive it finally stopped raining and the outside temp went below freezing. The truck threw a collision warning fault on the dash and that killed the adaptive cruise control. I checked the plastic bumper cover and it had no ice on it so whatever was causing the issue had gotten up behind the bumper cover. Is anyone aware of how to get behind the plastic portion of the bumper to clean off the radar unit, and is it even possible without actually removing the plastic cover? The annoying thing was it was below freezing and it took 3 days before it warmed up enough to melt the ice off of the unit. Being without the adaptive cruise was a major bummer, I have grown to really love that feature. The second time it happened was during during my 800 mile drive home. I expected it to happen because of the amount of ice built up on the front of the truck. Ford touts the collision warning as a safety feature, I guess it might be as long as you live where it doesn’t get below freezing outside. Fortunately for me I have a heated garage, so normally it will melt off every day when I get home, but it’s annoying when I’m away from home.

Now, with all that being said, I love the Raptor and would not want to have any other truck out there right now. So Jake you can table your “get a Ram” comment... My uncle has a new Ram, let’s just leave it at “no thanks.”

Here’s a pic of the bumper after it had problems the second time. As I said, not unexpected with this amount of ice.

I just pulled off my front bumper to install baseplates for being towed behind my motorhome.

Thew front bumper must be removed to get full access to the radar detector. It is held on by three bolts. The cable was easily removed as needed.

My recommendation would be to get the truck in a heated area and flush the area with water.

"As mentioned above, it is designed to shut off in bad weather since it won't work sufficiently. A better service department would have told you this and pointed you to the owners manual showing that it is working as intended and sent you on your way a little more educated. Now they will replace a perfectly working part with a new one and you will experience the same thing once the "repair" is done. You will be mad and take it back and tell them it is not fixed and they will scratch their heads and wonder why the new part didn't "fix" an intended design".

I am not a fan of the collision avoidance warning. I could do without it and not care one bit. The only time it has gone off for me is when I have been behind a car moving over to the the right hand turn lane or clearing ahead of me while making a left turn. The loss of the adaptive cruise is another story. I do not use cruise control of any type on slippery surfaces, so during the precipitation event it’s not a big deal other than the annoying warning horn and message that pops up saying the collision warning sensor is not working. The fact that it didn’t work for 3 days while I was doing extensive driving was annoying. I guess it’s somewhat new tech on vehicles and is a work in progress. My only hope is that some of the Ford techs prowl this forum and might see that this doesn’t appear to be an isolated issue. With all the trolls on this forum lately that may not be very likely, unfortunately. And for clarity sake, cubsalltheway, I am not talking about you when I mention the trolls.

I have this same issue with a custom bumper that does not have a cover the sensor, just a screen. I have messed with the wires and connections but still have issues at times. The sensor is always clean as well and still have issues. The only thing I can think it that the sensor is going out or needs to be recalibrated. When my truck goes back to my builder for service in a couple of weeks they will be looking into it. If someone has any other guidance please let me know.

The angle of your ACC unit may need to be adjusted. This can happen when the ACC is relocated.

You ca adjust the sensitivity in the dash settings.

Had some extremely heavy rain last week and 2 different times our Nissan thew a similar message. Rain stopped, no message. I thought I read in the owner's manual about heavy rain/snow effecting the collision sensor or maybe I dreamed it

The angle of your ACC unit may need to be adjusted. This can happen when the ACC is relocated.

I actually had mine relocated to the original location and re calibrated. The previous owner had moved it up higher, for what I'm guessing, to accomidate an aftermarket bumper that was removed prior to trade in. The sensor would sporadically work and throw a message on the dash. I'd park and turn off the car and turn it back on and everything would work for a while then stop again. My local dealership doesn't have a lot of experience with the Raptor (they're pretty small) so they didn't want to deal with fixing it in the aftermarket location. They put it back to the stock location and it's been fine every since.
