Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering​

WARNING: Incorrect repair techniques or actions can cause an accidental Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deployment. Never compromise or depart from these instructions. Failure to precisely follow all instructions could result in serious personal injury from an accidental deployment.

    WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this manual, refer to health and safety warnings in section 100-00 General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

    Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation) .
  1. Determine if a SRS fault is present. Turn the ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition ON and monitor the airbag warning indicator. The airbag warning indicator illuminates continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turns off. Continue to monitor the airbag warning indicator for approximately 30 seconds as this is the time required for the RCM to complete testing of the SRS .
    • If a SRS fault is present the airbag warning indicator either fails to light, remains lit continuously or flashes. The flashing may not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition has been turned from OFF to ON. If this occurs, diagnose and repair any SRS faults before proceeding with other repairs.
    • If after the ignition has been turned ON for 30 seconds the airbag warning indicator remains unlit with no chime or SRS message displayed in the message center, no SRS fault is present.
    • If the airbag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime sounds in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps or a message displays in the message center. If this occurs, diagnose and repair the airbag warning indicator and any SRS faults before proceeding with other repairs.
No SRS Fault Present (with ignition ON, airbag warning indicator stays off after prove out)

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute before continuing vehicle service.
SRS Fault Present

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  1. Remove the RCM fuse or if equipped, BECMB fuse(s). Refer to Wiring Diagram Cell 11/Section 700-01 for fuse and relay information.
  1. For a vehicle equipped with a 3 blade BECMB / GWM fuse, install a 2 blade 10A fuse at the GWM position to allow the scan tool to communicate with the vehicle network.
  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  1. Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out a Network Test. Verify that the RCM and, if equipped, BECMB does not respond to the Network Test. If the RCM or BECMB pass the Network Test, remove the correct RCM or BECMB fuse and repeat the Network Test to verify before proceeding.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  1. Disconnect the battery.
    Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures) .
  1. Wait at least one minute before continuing vehicle service.

If I'm reading that correctly @Keshka , if there is no SRS fault, turning the ignition off and waiting 1 mins is all that I need to do before removing the airbag?

That is verbatim from the Ford service manual....and in reading it, I think you are correct. I have always pulled the fuses as an additional precaution. I did an airbag system replacement on a 2017 F250 awhile back, it had less than 2000 miles on it. First problem...actually finding any parts to repair it with. At the time I did it, only two sets in the US were available. Second, with the newer rigs insurance companies are totaling vehicles that have had a major airbag deployment simply because of the cost of repairing the damage caused by the bags. Dash panels get ripped open, door trim destroyed, ect. The overall bill on the 2017 was over 8k.

As far as I know nobody has gotten it yet. @topgun964 was the closest and @Antho is our FORSCAN expert but his part was cancelled and not sure when he will get it.

But as far as I know now, I think some of the modules in the truck will definitely need to be updated to match the MY22 ones. My truck is going into the shop for some issues and I’m asking them if they can reflash everything to the latest firmware they have. Then I’ll hopefully have my part (been on order for ages now) and can apply the forscan changes.

I also tried asking my dealer if they can do it but they referred me to their ford performance specialist who is on vacation.

many dealers actually do not know how to totally reflash modules. Yes, the diagnostics are laid out step by step and procedures sent down by Ford. Watch this vid and learn the details of it.

Reviving this thread to see if anyone had any progress? @Antho did your steering wheel control with R button ever come? Mine got canceled due to indefinite delivery date.

@topgun964 you ever get any further? Don’t want to be using you as a test bunny but it seems you’re the only one who’s managed to receive the part lol.

@PandaBoi I got my button installed and made the necessary changes in Forscan to get the buttons to work (with the exception of the R button).

I've been chatting with @Antho through PMs, but I will let him update his findings when he's ready.

I did get it and its installed and fully functioning. I have all of the asbuilt data changes on a spreadsheet. The issue is i had to flash the firmware on a few modules. So i'm brainstorming with a few folks on best way to try make it alot easier or less risky. Regardless, Its not going to be just changing some asbuilt data to get it working.
