Ford Raptor R vs Ram TRX

It’s the absurd markup on the R that really befuddles me.

A) Not everyone is going to pay that.
B) Who the hell wants a RAM...not me, no matter the price.

I think y’all missed my point. A Raptor R is MSRP $110, but you can’t touch it for less than $140k. I was asking the question as to why I would consider spending $140k for a Raptor R. If the reality is Raptor R = $110, TRX = $105… it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other…

TRX vs a 3rd Gen Raptor… I’ll take TRX all day long… that’s just my opinion…

Befuddled? Weren't TRX's going for crazy money over sticker when they first came out? I would imagine a full boat TRX with 20-30k ADM would be in the same neighborhood. This really isn't that hard to figure out.

Now, if you're here to just troll, jbTRX, none of this needs to make any sense because it won't matter.

For 99.9% of people, the TRX is a better buy compared to the Raptor R. Will the R be marginally better offroad? Probably. Will a marginal amount of owners actually offroad? More probable. Otherwise, the TRX and R come down to personal preference/brand loyalty. The final measure for the majority is cost and actual ability to get either truck.

Anyone can buy a fully loaded TRX around $90k if they're willing to order through one of a handful of dealers offering discounts and they are guaranteed a truck as Ram isn't limiting production. Because the R is limited, getting one at or near MSRP is extremely challenging, although possible, and the average sell price will end up around $130-140k.

For the .1% that beat the crap out of their TRX/Raptor in the desert like me, the R would only be a consideration at MSRP or if you just hate money. If you're a money hater, please adopt me so I can help you get rid of it.

The Raptor isn’t “marginally” better than the TRX off-road- it’s a good bit better measurably & subjectively, the BASE Raptor is better than the TRX off-road, the R just ups the ante on power. It seems to me many of the people I see doing serious off-roading a) are driving Raptors already or wranglers & Broncos & Tacomas & FJs much MUCH more than TRXs, & b) certainly do seem like these types of buyers DO have $$$ to burn to an extent @ least in terms of their off-roading hobby b/c the amount of mods people are blowing + camping gear etc seems like paying a bit extra upfront for more capability, more fuel range, & higher payload/less weight than a TRX would make sense

This is coming from a guy living in New England w/ limited access to GOOD off-roading- but when I travel out to UT/CA/NV/AZ/CO what I see repeatedly off-road are what I listed above - NOT TRXs - & most of the Raptors I see out there are usually all kitted out too….

For the type of off-roading I get to do the TRX would more than suffice for the most part….but the fuel penalty is what kept me away (that & always concerned about the MOPAR quality) but when I bought my 2nd gen2 I could’ve certainly gotten a TRX @ MSRP spending $10-$15k over a TRX & since I had a $70k check from my insurance provider burning a whole in my pocket wasn’t like I couldn’t “afford” the TRX

So in a nutshell when you get up to these price points & extreme vehicles I DO think legitimately better off-road capability DOES matter b/c many of the wealthy owners DO use the Raptor as intended

Same reason why guys who have the $$$ & are into racing would look @ a challenger hellcat & say no thanks, they’d rather be in a “less powerful” Z06 or ZL1 or Viper ACR etc. b/c they really do race on road courses

A normal Gen3 is marginally better and I would imagine that would then transfer to a marginally better R. Also, you are definitely going to see more Raptors in the desert considering the total length of time they've been for sale. Either way, most buyers do not offroad their trucks and they become mall crawlers. The buyers that do, to your point, have no problem at all throwing money at them. Every Raptor or TRX I see being offroaded has some sort of modifications installed.

Being a TRX owner, I can attest to the horrible fuel economy but I have gotten over 300 miles per tank offroading at high speeds and there are very few occasions where anyone is going to need more than that without a gas station.

I do think better offroad capability matters too, but only to the 1% that will use the trucks as intended. Look at Shelby Raptor owners, you aren't seeing a bunch of those being thrown round in the desert. I've only seen a handful and that is the market for the R.

It's the new release of a performance vehicle. You couldn't touch a TRX for MSRP unless you had a connection when they were first released. Some people have to have the latest, greatest, bestest thing going. And they're willing to pay for it. It's no skin off your ašš, so why do you have your pánties in a ẅäd over it?
