Time for lights!

I was debating using the bumper slot for a 20" vs say a 40" behind the grill. My conclusion was to use the slot due to loss of light behind the grill. I believe the tests on this forum have shown there is about a 50% loss behind the grill. With that said I was initially looking heavily at the VisionX extreme emitter as it seems to be the bomb and all that, bright as hell, possibly the brightest bar out there in its size. After much discussion with the guys at my local shop (Ok4WD - very knowledgeable great guys http://ok4wd.com/), more research, reading racedezert, etc., I homed in on and got the Baja Designs, Onx6, in 20" for the slot in driving/combo pattern. The difference in the BD Onx6 vs most bars is that its got one row of emitters and as a result has a larger and much deeper reflector design for each LED emitter cell which results in farther throw. I believe this bar has the farthest throw downrange out there. BD is probably not the biggest brand on this site, but it is well regarded by racers on racedezert. More info here: OnX6, 20" Driving/Combo LED Light Bar

Mounted using slightly modified SDHQ bracket and BD feet. The SDHQ bracket gives a nice flush look and mounting surface, the BD feet allow for vertically pivoting the BD Onx6 to dial in the light alignment. I believe this light and bracket fill the slot nicely. License plate mount flipped "up".

I've also got BD squadrons in the bumper corner pockets for cornering (wide pattern) and fog lights (amber spot pattern). The fogs are the inside pair and mounted facing straight ahead while the cornering lights are the outside pair and mounted facing slightly to sides. Here is picture of left pocket side at an angle.

I'm quite happy with the result and coverage. The BD Onx6 gives coverage far downrange for greater visibility while at speed, going way beyond the stock HID lights or high beams while providing some fill as well. The BD squadron cornering lights provide side fill from where the HIDs stop out on each side to the mirrors. No more guessing if turns are safe. More info on light coverage here http://www.bajadesigns.com/science-of-lighting/lighting-zones/zone-off-road-enthusiast

Another thing I like about the Baja Designs is that all of their white lights are at 5000k color temperature, which is better for several reasons, the color is less harsh on the eyes for better visibility and less eye strain and the color is a closer match to OEM lights so it integrates better visually. More info here http://www.bajadesigns.com/science-of-lighting/5000k-daylight

The amber fogs cut thru mist and fog with little glare.

BD squadrons in wide pattern mounted as rear backup lights using TMX brackets.

The rears provide great rear visibility to see where the stock backup lights have little coverage, and the rears don't blow out the rear camera vision.

Let there be light!

Time for some beam shots. Not the best shots. But shows the general effect.

The fence in the photo is 150' away. It would have easily been illuminated from much further away but I couldn't back up any further. All photos here are iPhone photos.

I think this catches up with most of what I've been up to.

Ok here are some better night beam shots. All taken with the iPhone 6. Decent but not like a DSLR on a tripod.

This is a large open field bounded on the far side by a chain link fence, a stand of trees and some houses further out.

Control photo. It's dark.

Some notes: the far stand of trees is from 350' at its closest to about 425' at its farthest away. The house behind the trees is about 460' to 470' away. [All distances computed using GPS.] The House would be fully illuminated without the trees in the middle. The Baja Designs Onx6 really has far throw and this doesn't even do justice to how far that monster can illuminate. As you can see on the final shot, the lights all blend nicely and light up everything in front, far down range and to the side.
