Was under the truck doing my first oil change and inspection, and came across this. I have a bit of a whine in 4A I'm trying to figure out as well. Seems only present really somewhere between 40 - 60 KM/h for the most part oddly.

Anyhow ... is this normal? What do other front output shafts look like? This is the passenger side drive shaft output. Seem like there should be some sort of boot or protection here

Thats totally normal, If youre getting a whine, its most likely your IWE's. They are such a pos system. There is a solenoid control valve on the firewall where the IWE system gets its pressure control from, unclip the electrical harness and see if it goes away.

Thanks guys, and I think you're bang on with the IWE's. Done a bunch of digging over the last few days, and found a video up on YouTube of a guy with the same noise driving. The IWE system seems like a piece of crap; I found some aftermarket parts that eliminate the IWE system and uses only the transfer case to switch in and out of modes. Only drawback (though it's no different to any other AWD system or front wheel drive at that point) is that it leaves your front axels connected at all times which I'm sure robs a small bit of fuel economy while in 2H.

I'll get it fixed under warranty, and if it keeps happening I'll probably modify it with an upgraded CV axel kit and an IWE 'eliminator' set with locked sleeves.

If iwe issue shouldn’t be any noise in 4A or 4wd, should be some growling/grinding in 2H noticeable to some degree far as I understand it

and running in 4A all the time as a way to avoid it sounds no different than an IWE “eliminator” kit that keeps front axles spinning....& doesn’t void any warranty lol

I haven’t an issue w/ it yet but I do have an extra check valve on the glove compartment should I ever have an issue

My truck has been doing a weird Hum sound, as if it was a bad wheel bearing, nothing like the vids with the grinding noises. As soon as I pulled the plug on the solenoid, noise was gone. This was my 5th iwe in the last two years, I am done with the whole system. Once winter is done RCV's are going in my rig. The fuel mileage is totally arguable, in Canada, I have seen a 1L/100 change. The CV's will be constantly turning, SO well see, I have rebuilt oem's, as some aftermarkets took a huge dump on me. I think the fact im running 3.0 DSC's may be a culprit tho.
