I was going to give them a try but wasn’t sure if it would fit a scab

I would not think these engines would sound very good with a cut out. I really miss my one boat that had a 454 with an open 4" exhaust going out the transom. Made me smile every time I started it and would scare the shit out of anyone within a few hundred feet.
