Does anyone out there have a custom bed rack?

I'd like to run an inside the rails tonneau at some point but I need a bed rack for my RTT. I have found two options on the market, Adarac and TracRac. The Adarac is only rated for 500 lbs total and my RTT hold up to 4 people and weighs 120 lbs itself so I don't think that is enough. The TracRac is 1250 lbs but its crazy expensive and ideally I want something that is shorter than roof height (like the attached pic, put he uses angle iron along the length of the rail negating the possibility of a tonneau).

I am just curious if anyone has one and if so, how you mounted it, pics would be helpful if they are out there (I am considering using the stake pockets somehow).

Thanks!
John

BAK makes some bed rails integrated with their tonneau cover. The rack is rated 500 lbs + the rating on the cover, which i think is like 400 or so. It does stick out to the roofline, but it is another option. If you need exact price, shoot a PM.

I have seen people use the Thule 500 Xsporter Pro, it only holds 450lbs but I am sure they are rating it for dynamic loads (ie - when driving), I suspect the static capacity is at least 50% higher. One of the nice things is that it's height adjustable so you can travel with the tent low and raise it when you get where you're going. I think I might get one of these until I do something custom like what you posted originally.

I have seen that BAK cover but the height of the rack pretty much has that out of the picture for me. I am also not sure how I feel about the folding tonneau either though the function of it is pretty sweet.

Whoa, that thing is sweet! It looks like it wraps over the rails though which is a bummer for a tonneau. That design is awesome though!

Agreed, it does interfere with the tonneau which is a drag, but the custom rack I would like to do will also be in the way as I want to tie it into the bed bolts instead of just mounting it to the top of the bedsides. I figure with the tent in the lower position and the tailgate locked it would be pretty difficult to remove (steal) anything sizable from inside the bed. My plan is to get some Action Packers to help keep things dry.

Nice, I plan on getting some action packers too. Have you seen the action packer mounts that SWAG offroad makes?

Hadn't heard of them but they look pretty cool. Pricey though... $150!

Ok, I ended up ordering a Pace Edwards Jackrabbit tonneau with their explorer series rails. The rails have a t slot in them so I am going to use those to build my rack from and not worry about the stake pockets.

I should be able to create feet that use the track to bolt down and then it can be removable too.

Storage boxes

The Rubbermaid boxes don't hold up. I recommend these boxes from Home Depot. Much more durable and half the price. The ones in my custom racks are 22 gallon. They cost $30 ea.
