Crappy work. They get enough dirt to stick the thermostat, it is also causing some damage to the water pump. Maybe not enough to fail it, not helping at all. If they are getting that much crude in the water, I bet it’s in the oil system also. I would change the oil a couple times.

If you’re loosing coolant it’s a leak. I would fill the system, and pressure test it. watch for water coolant on the floor inside and outside the truck. Also note how much pressure loss you have in let’s say 30min to an hour. After all this remove the tester and start the truck and see if it runs a bit rough. This will be an indicator of a head gasket issue. Good luck hope it’s just a misaligned clamp.
