JoyJoy and I spent the afternoon running up down and around Highway 1, between Monterey and Big Sur. This stretch of Hwy1 is some of the prettiest, in our opinion. If you've never been, it alone is worth the trip.

"Coast Road" begins and ends on Hwy1. The trail begins 2.5 miles north of Big Sur, opposite the entrance to Andrew Molera State Park. It immediately begins to climb up a graded dirt road, passing through patches of thick trees and open ranchland. Along the early stretch of the trail, you can look west to see the highway, coast, and ocean. The views along this section are amazing. We found ourselves stopping along the way, and just staring.

The Coast Road goes through private property, passing a number of ranch access roads and private buildings, heads into and out of forested regions complete with some ancient Redwoods. The Road crosses Little Sur River before traveling along Sierra Creek.

Over the 10 mile run, you climb from sea level to the 1500 food summit, then back down to sea level, finishing at the world famous Bixby Creek Bridge. The trail itself is steep; if wet it could pose a serious challenge for any 4x4 and may be impassable (signs warn that it is impassible when wet; given the abrupt dropoffs in several places I doubt I'd try it when slippery). When dry, 4x2 was plenty good, although I would not try this in a passenger car as the route is seriously rutted in many places, sometimes nearly a foot deep and two feet wide. We took our time and finished the 10 miles in around 90 minutes.

We'll definitely be making this trip again, and maybe run it in reverse to see the opposite views. There are two other trails close to this one, both of similar distance and elevation change. You could make a day out of combining the three and a picnic lunch.

Here are a handful of pics we took today. Sorry for the quality... we had to use our iPhones.

Nice pictures J,

I've personally driven Hwy 1 north between San Fransisco and Eureka. Then I crossed over to hwy 5 from there cutting through the red woods into Oregon. Anyhow, the coastal hwy offers up some of the prettiest hwy in the state of California...especially seeing the Red Woods. Now I'm not sure about that part of hwy 1 but the northern part is murder on your forearms. By the time I got the Eureka, my forearms was on fire from turning a lot.

Thanks Ray. It really is spectacular out there.

I've only done parts of the SF to Eureka run, and I wasn't driving. But I do remember it being crazy windy (winedy?). Your power steering will get a workout for sure.

Yes sir, and it's a slow go as well. I mean by the time you got up lets say 30mph, it was time to hit the brakes and wind back another direction. But it was well worth it if you ask me  We got so tired we had to pull over and ran into a wonderful small bed and breakfast place. When woke up in the morning we found out there was a little Red Wood park around the corner where they had a cross section of a Red Wood tree and stuff carved out of Red Woods like a small house. They even had one you could drive a car through. The size of those trees is truly amazing!

This all took place around the time I was transitioning to digital cameras and learning computers. So I don't have any of the pictures on the computer. One of these days I need see about uploading some of our pictures.

That sounds familiar... was where you stopped up in the Headwaters area? If so, I think I've seen that very same tree-cross section. Too cool!

I'd love to see those pics if you get them uploaded Ray!

I'm pretty sure most of my pictures from that trip are lost. I went to dig out my old digital camera and our son has ran off with the scan card:frown: I guess I'm just going to have to make a return trip to the Red Woods.

Anyhow, they told me there was two trees you could drive through. The one we drove through was what I believe is the Shrine Tree in Humboldt County.

Here is a picture I found on the net:

It really was a spectacular day on the coast yesterday. The shades of blue in the ocean were so vivid. A lot of amateur and professional photographers where all along the drive before we veered off onto the trail. As we were assending on the trail the views were georgous. It's like it was made for the Raptor to climb. At one point we were saying to one another "imagine having a house up here?" Then sure enough we approach this one area and look up, there was this stand alone, mulit-million dollar home sitting on the peak with 360 ocean views. It was jaw dropping. Looking forward to our next coastal trail adventure.

Jason and Joy,

Those are some awesome pictures. What a wonderful drive. I've only been up that way one time back in 2003. I stayed up in Monterrey for a week for some training. But, my Team had to leave "abruptly" for almost burning down Fort Ord. No joke! We were throwing stuff in the back of trucks after a "small" incident with smoke grenades in a dry grassy field and leaving the area as quickly as possible....would have been good to have a Raptor! LOL

Ironically, Naval Special Warfare hasn't been allowed to return since! LMAO
