My dealer quoted $500 down to order...and an unknown lead time.

What dealer where? How much off was he giving? Oh, welcome!

So what would you have to do to keep that from happening? 100% down?

I’m not sure, you don’t own the truck until the deal is done after delivery. Even if you prepaid the order there is no vin to transfer ownership. I don’t know how often this actually happens, but my bother was concerned about it with his F-250 Tremor 7.3 he ordered in January.
