Check your Spare

While installing a new Borla exhaust on the blue beast today I was going to remove the spare tire to have more room to work while removing the old and installing the new exhaust.

Come to find out the spare lock wasn't actually attached to anything. Put my key in and the damn lock just fell off the truck with no cable attached. Looked around the spare and couldn't see any sign of attempted theft. I can't tell exactly what the ford plant did but it looks like they just tied the cable off above the spare so it's just hangs in place..


First f&#k up I've seen on the truck so far. Hope there's no more than that, but I'm not gonna hold my breathe.

The lock on the bumper is just a cover for the hole. Nothing is attached to it nor is there any factory security locking spare tire cable. The only level of security is the locking plug which isn't much. You will need something after market if you have concerns.

the lock that "fell out" is just a plug. It isn't supposed to be attached to anything. To lower the spare there is a channel you access with the rod from the spare tire kit in the truck. Line the rod up from the hole where the plug was into the channel (it's hard to see). Once it seats in the channel, rotate counterclockwise and the spare comes down.

And when you remove it, throw it inside the cab and not laying on the back bumper...probably gonna cost $30.00 for a new plug.

I lost mine early on. $90 to replace from the dealer.
