Hello! Please forgive the ignorant question, I have never had a truck and am coming up with some conflicting advice from friends and answers on the internet.

I’m moving my stuff to Texas. Professional movers are coming but my wife and I have a lot of books so I’d like to put some boxes in my truck and save the cash (for truck stuff!). If I weigh 200 lbs, what’s my max?

I see the “payload” is 1200 lbs. What does that mean? Does that include me and the stuff in the cabin? It’s a 20 hour drive. I don’t plan on towing anything.

Thanks!

Payload is weight you can add as cargo (in the form of passengers, accessories, cargo, etc.).

Ehhhh I don’t wanna be too nonchalant about the suggested payload, but that 1200 lb figure is really most important for what you’re putting in the bed....& that’s especially true w/ a Raptor due to the soft offroad suspension.

but ahhh....when it came to ALL my other 1/2 ton p/u’s I have exceeded the suggested payload by 10-15% in the bed alone at times & as long as you’re not carrying that kinda weight for a long time or under duress should be ok. For instance w/ my last GMC p/u (was an all terrain- also had slightly less payload than a standard Sierra) the max payload was like 1850 lbs & I weighed up 2300 lbs of stones while building a fire pit...just in the bed. I also had whatever else I keep in truck - car seats, 75 lb Dobie, my 150 lbs self etc

w/ the raptor on long trips I’ve gone 750 miles to northern Ontario trailering 1200 lb jet ski + bout 450 lbs in bed + me, wife, dog & 50 lb kid & random stuff in truck.

suspension stock & was still level not squatting no issues

Once you put yourself and a few boxes of books, you will see the rear end sag in your raptor. Don't overload it too much and you should be fine. Towing a 1200 lb jetski is nothing, its the hitch weight when towing as well. Good luck on your move.

Also, use common sense where the heaviest load is located/distributed. 1200# next to the tailgate is very different from 1200# in bed against the cab. Better off with heavier items forward (in the bed or in the rear seat/cargo area) and overall weight distribution from L to R pretty even... I know, thanks captain obvious.

^This. Flip the back seats up and fill the floor with boxes of books. Maybe two layers deep. Then more against the front of the bed. One layer, maybe a couple two three rows. Then light stuff on top and behind. Should be able to handle you plus 1200 pounds just fine. Low and forward is the ticket.
