Ford would be suicidally stupid to build a one off, limited run truck, because Dodge put out a mass produced, one up machine on the Raptor and there’s no denying it. This, and numerous other threads on here illustrate this quite clearly. Are there die hards? yes, some will only buy the Raptor.
But, Ford doesn’t seem to be listening here.
If they really want legions of loyal Raptor owners to jump ship to another marque, and basically doom the model, go ahead and produce the one off, super limited model that will go to a select few who will turn them into garage queens or resell them on the secondary market.
I would be highly disappointed if Ford doesn’t deliver the Raptor R in sufficient quantity or at a reasonable price point to compete with the TRX. As you mentioned, I can’t imagine that it would be that terribly difficult to slap in a 5.2 Predator and call it a day.
That said, I think the death of ICE is still well over a decade away and I can still yet image a future where carbon capture makes emission regulations negligible and/or environmentalists realize the ecological harm of strip mining the planet for battery components, thus allowing ICE to reign for the rest of our high octane fueled lives.
If Ford cared to bend an ear in my direction, I would recommend developing a modest displacement (I’m thinking 4.0-4.9L) V8, preferably supercharged, but possibly dual turbo charged engine. Then focus on reducing weight and improve suspension travel and stability for the Raptor R. Ram wants to build a 700+ hp monster, more power to ‘em. Give me 550+ hp/ft-lbs of torque and long travel suspension. That’s the raptor’s niche and that’s what will keep me in the raptor game. And skip the overkill on electronic gadgetry. Bluetooth, electronics charging, and GPS would be sufficient for me. If they can do all that and keep gas mileage comparable to my Gen 1, I’ll take out a second mortgage on my house, sell a kidney, live under a bridge… whatever.. to pay for it.
Hope my kids like top ramen…
