here is when you have it really bad. Benn 100% fixed since they did the BIG FIX
Mine just started doing it that bad, I have an early 2018 model had the phasers replaced @ 54K miles now at 94K it started about 3 months ago and now is this bad, trying not to drive the truck now.

What ended up being the repair? I am thinking timing chain and phasers?

just the cam phasers with new new ML3Z part numbers.

The long crank was causing fuel starvation issues while the cams were set to correct time on start up. Have not had any long start issues since the cam phaser fix

Cam Phasers AGAIN! Bought a used 2017 from a dealer with 60,000 kms. Warranty records showed cam phasers done January 2022 at 54,000 km adn reprogrammed. Now the truck has 92,000 km's and it needs cam phasers again. I am going to get them to replace the timing chain, water pump and thermostat. How do I make sure this is done with the upgraded parts so I don't have it happen in the next 40,000 km?

Mine is back at the dealer as of yesterday, did the phasers back in Dec 2020 @ 54K miles now back @ 94K miles.... this time sounds way worse.

I got a claim # from Ford Customer Care sounds like they are willing to step up and help.

That is some extremely low mileage to have them go again. Can you get a copy of what phaser they put in? I would’ve expected the newer ones

I will chat with the service manager and ask him what phasers they used in January 2022. And I will make sure they use the ML3Z this time.

You need to make sure it has the updated calibration as well, or they will wear out again. It was recall 21B10. The old parts have not been available for years, they can only order the current part numbers.

Mine is making the same start up noise off a cold start. I have a 2018 with 59k, no history of them being replaced. Is it safe to drive the truck?

3 cold starts later

You will be fine. As long as no CEL has popped up you can drive it with the rattle, especially if you need to wait a bit for parts/your dealer availability.

Here is mine. It is a lot worse when I start it up for the first time in the morning. Does this sound like cam phaser?
