Cam Phaser debacle

That’s is not cam phaser rattle. Phaser rattle is a very distinct clatter that lasts only 2-5 seconds and then immediately goes away. What you’re most likely hearing is the high pressure fuel pump and wastegate rattle, which are normal and most audible on a cold start.

Started it again this morning and no noise. Keeping my fingers crossed but will see how it is every morning this week and report back.

Whatever it was, I'm not quick to believe it's the DI fuel pump, wastegates or injectors. I've had turbo DI cars for over 10 years now, I'm well acquainted with all those noises.

Currently going through solution phase 2 of the cam phaser recall. The programming of course didn’t work so I dropped it back off at the dealership for the “real” fix. First off, the dealership wouldn’t accept my video evidence of the issue. They need to diagnosing it themselves and required me to drop it off for inspection. Called me back today and of course said it was the cam phaser problem and asked if I was sure I wanted to go through with it. They told me once they have the parts they need to keep my Raptor for at least 2 weeks. After I challenged that by saying everyone else reported it to be a 3 day shop job, they said “Well we can’t work on these recalls at once. We work on the recalls whenever we get spare time.” I almost dropped the phone in disbelief. Even this I was accepting of, but when they told me I couldn’t get a loaner or reimbursed for a rental car I lost it. I purchased the most expensive vehicle on their lot in 2019. Truck has less than 25k miles and is in flawless condition. I’ve had 3 separate visits to the dealership to address this recall and now I’m expected to just magically go without a vehicle for 2 weeks+? Anyone else experiencing ridiculous customer service like this or is my dealership just horrible?

I went through to the same thing. Programming and then physical part replacement. You should be good to go afterwards. Just note how the truck runs afterwards, it may need 1 more reflash to be back in all its glory. I had mine reflashed recently at the dealer and all the weird idle, vibrations, shudder have gone away .

My appointment is for July 5. They said the repair takes 2 days and they need to do 3 10 mile "heat" cycles. Ford customer service says that's bs but it seems these dealers are just making up their own rules. If it makes you feel better @jrgray86 I went to 4 dealers before I found one that actually wanted to do it. I've been after getting my phasers replaced since March and I'm just worried now that the truck will just never be right again.

Following up on my previous posts. Doesn't seem to be phasers, something is rattling on colder starts but it doesn't do it every time.

2018 Gen 2 here, purchased new. Started hearing the “rattle” on startup in Feb at about 50,000 miles. Received a notice from Ford about the same time to do a re-program, which was done with no improvement. Dealer said OK to drive, so I did. Ford then required another re-program before approving the cam phaser replacement, also no improvement. Took four months to get the parts. Installed this week (9.7 hours of tech time, completed in one day) and no more rattle, truck running well. I have some concerns about long-term durability but no issues so far. I was doubtful about the reliability of this engine at the time of purchase so also purchased an extended warranty for the first time ever. Hopefully this will cover any future problems while I have the vehicle. Will move to the Raptor R next year or as soon thereafter as I can get one without a dealer added markup. All cam phaser work to date done under warranty (no charge) with no hassle.

Anyone have luck with contacting Ford corporate customer service (outside of a dealer network)? I’ve been waiting for 3 months to get scheduled to have my cam phaser overhaul work done. My dealer told me to anticipate being without that truck for 2+ weeks which makes having a rental car or loaner vehicle pretty mandatory. I’m on some loaner car waitlist, hence the delay in scheduling. Today my dealer told me they no longer do these repairs and I should contact another dealer. Can they legally do that? It’s not as if I broke my $80k truck. This is a problem FORD created, and aren’t all dealers obligated to take care of the issue? The dealer I’ve been working with is the dealer I purchased the truck from and where it’s been serviced from Day 1.
