there is probably a fair amount of damage/flooding/downed trees to the easten rail system because of the storm. it hasn't been a major talking point but i'm sure it has pushed back transit times this week

Exactly.. Any railcars (empty or loaded) that are at destination on the east coast are stuck there. Which causes a domino effect across the country with availability of empty railcars to be loaded.
Right now, they (automobile manufacturers, rail roads, and car haulers) are rerouting loaded railcars closest available unloading facility to be unload and shipped by truck or stored. Also lower volume destination routes are allowed to sit while they ship high volume destination to prevent overflow. All Mexico and Canada routes are automatically diverted to off site facilities to be ship be truck (since it is easier to get semi trucks back and forth the border than railcars)
All these plans have been set up since 1999 (y2k bug fears) and are in place to free up railcars to load up the daily plants production. Without the plants diverting vehicles to off site holding areas until railcars are available. Once they start shipping off site the rail transit times sky rocket..
From a former Ford Mixing center operations manager this is a nightmare problem heading their way. And I hope and pray they still use the diversion tools set in place in 1999..

The rail network is just that...a network. Trains don't travel empty. They bring loads from one place to another. If a handfull of freight trains get held up it's like a domino effect or a traffic jam if you will. So did Sandy affect rail transit? Absolutely

There might be an additional week or more added to delivery time, IF a shortage happens. When I worked at ALL Fords mixing centers (new vehicle distribution centers) for seven years. We made plans to prevent a bottle neck if y2k, natural disaster, etc happens. As long as they still use the plans, it means a week delay to the customer. Verses months before the plans were put into place..

Where in CA are you? Mine has been in CA all week and schedule to arrive at the dealer on Nov 8th.

I am in Mountain View. I ordered my truck thru South County Ford in Morgan Hill.

I've been waiting since July 19th. The next 13 days are going to fly by. My god I can just taste it!
