Does anyone know if you can use the Borla Atak muffler with the OEM resonator or do you have to use the supplied Xpipe?

I just found out the answer to this myself this weekend after picking up a Borla Atak muffler. You can!

You'll need a section of 2 3/4" exhaust tubing that is shorter than the two extensions (less than two feet...I'd have to measure the section of pipe to give you an exact length) that come with the muffler and three exhaust clamps for 2 3/4" pipe (I used band clamps since they didn't have t bolts in the right size). I had to buy 10 feet of tubing from NAPA in order to have the correct size pipe since no one else in the area had it which sucked since it was 40 bucks but...it is what it is.

Alternatively, you could cut on of the pipes on the muffler that connect to the stock resonator, but I didn't want to do that in case I wanted to revert to the stock system for some reason in the future.

All in I'm out $350 for the muffler and everything else needed to get it on the truck with the OEM resonator.

That looks like you'd be able to use the two extensions that come with the Borla muffler. The problem with the OEM resonator and the Borla ATAK for me was that one pipe was 2 3/4" and the other was flared to slip fit OVER a 2 3/4" pipe. Which meant that one of the extension pipes was oriented flared side to flared side rather than flared side to slip fit side. I solved that by using a piece of 2 3/4" pipe to replace the Borla extension on the one side.

This looks like it should be straight up ok.

I'd be curious to hear it and hear your thoughts on it once you get it and have it installed. I'm not sure I'm in love with how the ATAK sounds with the OEM resonator and this mid pipe sounded pretty good from the clip I heard. I know it'll be a bit before they ship but...update us!

:::::UPDATE:::::

This morning I had an epiphany....
I loosened all the claps including the connections at the downpipes. After tender moments and whispering sweet nothings to it, I was able to get all the hangers aligned and installed.
One thing that also bothered me...
Last night I went to double check all the clamps after a full heat cycle and I noticed how close the muffler was to the drive shaft. I have a balance weight on mine near the muffler and it had actually made contact with the muffler.

Previous findings....

So a little update to this....

I have installed the SPD trombone and love it!
However, the Borla muffler was not designed to fit with mid section other than their own.

Here are some thoughts with the Borla….

1. I had to cut 3 3/8” off the passenger side extension which was basically the flared section.

2. The Borla exhaust is designed sit flat and has both exhaust pipes equal distance to the ground.
OEM has a slight cant to it and the driver side is slightly higher than the passenger side. This caused the Borla muffler to need to be twisted slightly. As a result I wasn’t able to use the passenger side exhaust tip hanger at all. I'm referring to the one that connects to the frame, not the bumper one. That one was used.

3. The fore side of muffler hanger had to be twisted and could only use one bolt to secure it.

4. Due to the new cant of the muffler, I had to grind off the OEM tip orientation studs that enter the muffler. These are the little studs on the exhaust tip pipes that slide in to slots on the muffler.
This allowed me to properly align the tips.

Mine didn’t line up very good either , they sent me a new x pipe but I’ve seen other reviews that say this is a common problem, they said they would make me a custom one .

My borla attack x pipe was off center and at wrong angle , it worked but had to use ultra copper exhaust gasket sealer, they sent me a new x pipe but it looks the same , I’m not taking it all apart to find out , they said they would build me a custom one . I just need to draw up what needs to be changed to help the connection , for 1200 dollars you would think they would have tried one on a raptor before selling this exhaust kit.
