Blinking 2H and 4H

Had some deeper water to go through today and switched to 4A and it worked smoothly. Switching back to 2A the transmission/transfer case won't make the full switch.
2A just blinks and still acts like it's in 4H.
Going back to 4A it just blinks now and won't come out of 4H.

Any clues?

Did you try putting it in 2WD and reverse for a few feet?

Turns out it was a faulty ground in the engine bay.
