Why are these gears so much more expensive than billet gears advertised for DOHC 4.6/5.4? Bigger pump?

Limited production run. More buyers for 4.6/5.4 gears so they can do a volume run on them and get cost down.

Ok I wanted to bump this thread up and continue the discussion and leave the Pulley thread alone.

So I'm reading in here that we need to change the harmonic balancer too?

This would also be the time to get the 8 rib pulley system going as well.

And how hard would it be to do this mod, any special tools involved?
Would the front of the engine have to come off?

If this is a relatively easy DIY then the cost wouldn't be so bad.

I'm pretty sure that replacing the harmonic balancer would not require pulling the front cover off for the install. Pretty sure. I've never looked at it though.

I should have been more specific, I was talking about the oil pump.
It looks like the pump gears slip over the front shaft of the crank but not sure.
That' why I'm asking.
I do wonder about the harmonic balancer with the pulleys on the inside.
Usually (as good practice) you need to replace the front seal if your pulling that out.

Balancer has to come off. Whole front of the engine will have to be torn down and radiator removed. I would not call it a hard job, but it will take lots of time. The oil pump rides on the crank shaft behind the front cover and balancer.

I have looked into 8 rib option as well. ATI does make an 8 rib balancer for the 6.2, then you would need all new accessory pulleys custom made. Whipple confirmed their idler pulley that comes with the blower will work with an 8 rib.

Thanks rbarn for the info.

I can't and don't have the place or time to do this on my own, but when I pull
the trigger to have Livernois build mine up to the 6.6 that will be on the list!!!

I remembeer you have looked into the 8 rib system for that 3.250 pulley.
Did you ever try it?
