The tire wear factor is one thing that I was concerned about with these "special" BFG's for the Raptor. I plan on getting a 2012 here soon. Do you think it would be worth talking to the dealership about asking them to put on the "R" version instead of the "S" version.

The "R" is technically a little cheaper, so there might not even be an additional cost, or at least only a minimal cost for the labor.

Here are the differences between the 2...

First one is OE - 121/118S
second is - 121/118R

They are mounted on different width rims. Diameter and width will not be a direct comparison

the diameter doesn't change, the section width will be wider on wider rims. it says they're a bit taller and lighter, but skinnier.

Alright, fellas, as a relatively new guy in this whole Raptor game, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the hell the reason is behind the stock "special" tire. What are its benefits, if anything? Please enlighten me. Thanks. - YODA:Jedi:

They gave a few differences back when the Raptor first came out like different siping and softer compound. Ive looked at both side by side and the siping is the same.

I think the real difference, someone correct me if Im wrong but isnt the top speed limited to 110mph ? The "R" is rated for 106mph so Ford would have to put a "S" rated tire on, which is 112mph.

The top Speed is limited to 100mph. But they have a softer compound making them better for the sand.

yeah, my dad has been selling tires since I was about 12 and he was skeptical when i told him about all of the wonderful attributes Ford claimed with the BFG A/T S. He had one look at them and couldn't tell the difference between the S and R, supposedly the rubber compound is softer and better for sand traction but for the rest of us it just means shorter tire life. Since I don't plan on removing my speed limiter or going over 100 any time soon I won't miss the additional speed rating or the loss of tread life.
