My wife and I were able to join 8 other Raptors (and one chebby) today out at Anza Borrego and Ocotillo Wells. There are only two words I can think of to describe this truck:
IN.SANE.
Here's the breadcrumb trail from my GPS:
Tons of soft powdery sand. Some good mud. Tons of rocks and boulders. Tons of climbs. Tons of descents. This truck handled them in stride. This thing took everything we threw at it, and threw it back at us with a scoff.
Here's some pics from the day:
Never send a Chevy to do a Raptor's job (he didn't make it even after several attempts, poor guy :Na_Na_Na_Na
Leave it to Brian and his Rap to show the boys how its done.
Here's a three pic sequence of SVTCali's crawl down this 7 or 8ft descent.
Here's a couple of my aftermath:
Note to self: if you plan to thrash thru some silty mud, close the damn moonroof first!
Some group shots
The day wasn't without mishap unfortunately. MarkT lost his rear somehow (he was in 2h, diff locked and wasn't stressing it at the time it let go) and had to front wheel drive it in to a local shop. He ultimately decided to get the truck towed to Ford and have them eval/repair/replace what needs doing. Fellow member ChadB stepped right up and made sure Mark had a ride home and was well taken care of, so that was cool. But it sucked to have to leave one of our Raptor brothers behind for the rest of the day. I'm sure Mark will keep us posted on what Ford finds.
Also toward the end of the day we lost touch with two of our crew somehow. By the time we emerged they were nowhere to be found despite our best efforts to contact and find them. One was Dan, and Brian was very confident Dan had probably led the other back to camp. I'm sure all was well and that they're out there right now freezing their asses off :gy: (twas cooooolllddd out there last nite)
Big time thanks and props to MagicMtnDan for organizing this event, and making strangers feel like friends right from the first minute. Also a big time thanks to Brian for leading the way and expertly guiding us newbies. My wife and I had an incredible time, and you can count on this being the first of many such trips.
Thanks all! And stay tuned for a ton more pics from today as well as from tomorrows events. We couldn't camp or stay for tomorrow, but lots of guys were so I'm sure there's a ton more cool stuff coming!
