Need to pick up some 12' 4x4's and 2x4's. Guessing someone here has successfully gotten home without losing the load. Looking for tailgate-down solutions.

I brought home some 12’ base trim last weekend. I probably wouldn’t do it again. I went tailgate up to keep it above sedan windshields because I didn’t trust idiots around me to see the red flag. It was sketchy.

Was afraid of that. The length is definitely on the bubble.

I hauled some 12ft deck boards, 2x10x12's and few 2x8x12's for the deck i built. Tailgate up. Everything loaded. Then folded the bed cover down to where is rested on boards. Tie down across ends resting on tailgate. No issues at all.

I hauled some 16' 4x4's with the tailgate up. Also purchased some bags of concrete to weigh them down in the bed and strapped them in place as well.

You can but it sucks. Tailgate up and bring some weight for the front of them.

It’s fine if you use tie down straps correctly. I need to haul some 12’ hardie trim Thursday morning actually. The longest I hauled were 18’ long fascia boards with tailgate down but I used my hitch extender I normally use for when I haul the canoe. The thought of some texting bozo not noticing the flags and sending load straight inside the cab is always on my mind.

How much weight can the plastic/polymer tailgate caps take before they crack under the load of multiple boards. Think I'll give it a try.

I have hauled 16 foot 2x6s, I secured half of an extension ladder at the front of the bed, tailgate down and strapped it down at the back then secured the boards to the ladder, worked well for me.
