Anyone doubling up spares on flat bed spare tire racks like JDS or KHC? Or have a chase rack recommendation that could fit under a Retrax cover?

Hi All - I’m wondering if anyone is using a bed mounted flat style spare tire mount, such as JDS Customs or KHC, to hold two spare tires stacked on top of each for extended off-road runs?

Supposedly it’s doable but I’m wondering if it’s “doable” but don’t actually do it. Not sure how the hardware and bed bolts would handle the abuse.

I’d prefer to not go full chase rack as I enjoy having my Retrax cover on the bed and would only need two spares a couple times a year. Wondering if anyone has experience using that style of spare tire mount and can them holding up to off roading (TORR or TRR events for example).

Alternatively, if anyone has any recommendations on a chase rack that I could use with my Retrax cover that would be helpful too (probably a pipe dream though).

If I missed a prior thread on this when searching let me know and I’ll close this one down. Any help is appreciated.

yeah, theres previous threads about it, butnyou are lucky enough to not get hazed for making a new thread. its far and few inbetween. i have a chase rack that holds a storage compartment for my tow straps and air hoses. has a second battery location. holds my 4 air compressors, a tool set, 10 gallons of gas (2 5gallon cans) a spare, an air tank, and a jack. i keep one spare in the oem location. this allows me to still run 2 spares and also close my bedcover. i have the revolver x4s.

Your approach of keeping a tire in the OEM slot and one in the bed is probably the smartest move for my needs. I did see a thread on Gen2 rack and covers which led me to these ADD tire carriers which look pretty nice and can be mounted where I need them but they're pricey. Seems there are a few threads on covers and carrier but none on the concept of two tires being held down on a flat style bed mount tire carrier.

Ultimately, I think the JDS Customs rack w/ the power tank and jack mount would be perfect for 99% of my use so will probably go that route. Was hoping someone on here was using a similar setup and actually had two spares mounted in the bed this way just to see if it was feasible. Worst case, OEM spot and one in the bed will be my move!

I have the same dilemma, and I also need my bed open often for mountain bike trips. Those ADD ones linked above are pretty sweet and would work pretty well, but they definitely have the Raptor tax on them.

I did see someone at the Raptor Rally at KOH a couple of weeks ago with 2 flat mounted spares (he had them near the tailgate for weight distribution). I didnt see a rack, just some D Rings and straps. I didnt hear of any issues with tires coming out over the 2 days and we got after it pretty good. I think this may be the way I go (for now).

Ideally, what I would I love is a traditional bed rack for 2 vertical tires, but have some sort of base/mount and a way to relatively quickly disconnect and remove it and just leave the mount/base behind. This would allow me to have it in place during runs when I need it and keep the bed open the rest of the time.

I mountain bike too so have the bed fairly open with the option to put gear into flat mounted racks is ideal.

Do you recall how the guy had his two tires mounted? Stacked or kinda angled next to each other?

I don’t see how he could have two laying flat side by side near the tailgate hence the ask.

A custom rack where the baseplate is in and can be removed would be awesome but then the Raptor tax comes into play with the custom approach. Without building dedicated off road rig (I daily mine) it’s all about compromise unfortunately.

they make them. theres cups that are mounted through your bed bolts and the rack sets in place and you use a cotter pin to hold each corner of the rack in place

They were stacked on top of each other.
