I have read that doing it freehand risks cuts in the paint. Should I be concerned about this when choosing an installer?
there are kits out there that allow you to fully wrap over all the edges on a mojority of the vehicle. i believe they did a kit on my gt500 and the only thing it didnt 100% wrap over are the hood vents and the rear decklid because of the odd angles or dimples in the middle of it.

Very true! I had an absolute horror story on a brand new black truck years ago where there was rzr blade cuts all over where they cut the PPF. Do not let anyone cut on your new vehicle like that.

Regardless of who you choose, you should always find someone that you can trust working on your car. A skilled installer probably does free hand cuts on cars all of the time. The proper way of cutting a film on a car uses basically just the weight of the blade to make a etched line on the surface of the film.

Pre cut pieces can eliminate the need to make cuts on the car. Sometimes even with pre cut pieces, an installer may make minor cuts to do small adjustments. However, again, realistically speaking, if you are going to a skilled installer, you shouldn't worry too much about them cutting your paint.

The nice thing with PPF is because it is clear, you can see everything. Versus a color wrap, if they cut your paint, you won't see it until after the wrap has been removed. Additionally, most of the time, cuts are not made on the paint anyways. They are being trimmed in the body gaps of the car to get enough material to wrap around the edges.

This is bad information. The best PPF guys don't use templates and they cut the film on your truck. They don't damage your paint, though. They cut away from the vehicle on the excess that is not touching the paint. If you had an installer cut up your vehicle, that doesn't mean to not use installers that don't use templates. It means not to use installers that don't know what they are doing.

I would much rather not take the chance oh the installer nicking the paint somewhere along the way. Having it pre cut by the machine is the safer bet.
