You can get the full 7 out and put the full 7 in if you do this one thing:
Let the crankcase drain with the old filter off.
Removing the filter apparently releases oil from a gallery that does not drain with just the drain plug removed from the crankcase. But if you've replaced the plug to pull the filter, then that dirty oil simply drains into the crankcase and is retained. Result: you don't get 7 quarts in, and you start out with contaminated oil.
Try this: "Fully" drain the crankcase, replace the drain plug, pull the old filter, and then remove the drain plug again and see how much MORE dirty oil drains out.
