Biggest is correct, the new owner would have to purchase some new tunes with their truck's info. Mike would email these to the buyer and they would just have to download them. Anyone interested in this should probably already know that. It'd have to be done with any used tuner.

Thank you.

I went with a tune from Jon Lund of Lund Racing. It solved all my issues. His tune can be obtained remotely, there are several ways to go about getting his tune. Easiest is to go to their website.

Lund Racing | EFI Tuning SpecialistsLund Racing | EFI Tuning Specialists

Thanks I will check it out.

do we have a thread which explains this in more depth. I have be thinking about getting a tuner for... well as long as I've owned the Raptor.

*why get a tuner?
*new or used: pros/cons?
*cost for additional tunes?
*how to explain to the wife that you need it?

I just learned the buyer will have to buy tunes for their truck. I'm not sure how much just the tunes cost, so I lowered the price to $200 + shipping.

Thanks,

You'll be able to unleash the beast. Better shift points, improved mpg if you can stay off the skinny pedal.

*new or used: pros/cons?
Used can save you money. If you only want one tune then you could get this for a killer deal.

*cost for additional tunes?
5star website shows a sale of $65 for two emailed tunes of your choice. I believe they have packages for more tunes too.

*how to explain to the wife that you need it?
Buy now, ask questions later. Lol

If you have a Whipple then you NEED to get your custom tunes from Lund, they have mastered the Whipple tuning to be able to provide email tunes, other tuners specialize in other brand chargers they have worked with the most, but with all custom tuning, you run the risk of the tuning not being exactly what you want the first time so retuning to match your specific needs/wants may be necessary.

If you returned your truck back to stock and "unlocked" the tuner from your vehicle then the new owner can use the preloaded tunes. The X3 tuners lock to one vehicle at a time, but not permanently; it left the SCT factory with either 3 or 5 "unlocks left". As long as it has "1 unlock left" you will be able to use the device on your truck. If the SCT device has "0 unlocks left", then it will need to be sent back to SCT to be reset for a fee ($65). Every time you use a SCT device to tune a different vehicle, it recognizes the different VIN number and uses up one of the "unlocks left". When you power up the SCT device, the amount of "unlocks" will be in the device info screen.

So I do not believe you HAVE to purchase new tunes, but you want to confirm this before the sale. I "BELIEVE" I have all of this correct, but anyone that finds anything different should post the corrections.

So the SCT tunes are already on it and the 5 star tunes are separate and specific to vehicle correct?

Guys, please let the OP keep his For Sale thread on topic. If you have a tech question, please ask it in the appropriate section.

I have to think that the information provided is on topic because it helps the op understand what he can sell the tuner for and it helps whomever wants to buy understand what they can and can't do with it. But ok. No more tech help in this thread.
