It was a one time thing to know exactly how much I can run the truck. We're limited to only one gas company here in Germany unless we want to pay $9 (yes $9) a gallon. They are usually few and far between and often times 5-20 miles off the autobahn.

Filled it up this afternoon and put in exactly 136 liters (35.92 gallons) when it clicked on top of the gallon I had in the can.

Ya its designed that you can run low but getting on E is when the pump can heat up. There is a plastic cup surrounding the pump that keep the fuel around the pump but I wouldnt make a practice of running it low. I never let mine get below 1/4 tank. Here is a pic of what it looks like
