Have you ever tried to shut off your car via the app while the car is in drive or is driving? It doesn’t work.

If the car gets stolen via some high tech method via internet hacker (or low tech method via a tow truck), you have insurance. You can’t stop a determined thief.

You gotta stop worrying and live. Put away the tin foil hats. All the videos “proving” how easy it is to hack into a car look staged. It sure does excite some people though.

Ford's modem and infotainment design both employ a security methodology that makes updating software less convenient.

I would choose security over "ease of use" due to the potential security risk inherent with creating an easier to use update methodology.

However, it seems that many find this "antiquated" and annoying since you have to use a USB drive to manipulate the Sync OS. The "many" should understand the caveats of making everything "easy".

Furthermore, how liable do you think Ford is if some hacker group figures this out and starts crashing ford vehicles, or something far more nefarious? No major corporation has an appetite to risk that, especially one who's product MUST be perceived as safe.

Very true and I can look at it from both angles. But in the end and ultimately safety at this point is going to win out and not getting sued. I certainly would like to see tech continue to improve and offer is more. Security just has to keep up.

In the case of Tesla, one reason they have to offer more OTA is the lack of a large dealer network who like the other automakers already have in place and can fall back on updating a vehicle. While say Tesla is ready to take more risks and do more now, we don’t really know what is locked down on that car either as far as starting and shutting it down remotely. You have to believe failsafes are still built in.

Well, I'll start by saying that some people do understand what is exposed. ;) The same goes for even commercially used aircraft. What is possible is very science-fiction-like and terrifying.

In essence, what ford does is lock down the root shell of the OSes unless a physical USB key is used. The danger there is that once "cracked" you could potentially use the stored routine that this system employs for malicious purposes.

While it isn't the most secure option, can you imagine if Ford required you to find that magical "default keypad code" card that comes in the owner's manual to apply an update?

Those that think having to use a USB stick might revolt and turn in their vehicles!

The best way to remain secure is to air gap. Anyone with access to a junkyard can yank an APIM and/or a modem from a wrecked vehicle, take it home and commence cracking it to find vulnerabilities. If there was a way to jump the modem and the infotainment, someone would find it and could then develop a full canbus hack, which is terrifying to me.

since they are air-gapped, unless you have physical access to connect the two, you have a layer of security that would be extremely difficult to circumvent.

with as much computer equipment that is in cars today, this kind of caution is welcomed. ( at least by me. )

I know tech has to evolve, but the burning question continues to be, at what expense?

I don't understand the security reasons of Sync 3 not being able to do over the air updates and without a USB memory stick.

I own a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with uConnect system. Not only does this system have more apps and options and settings.... but it will update over the air.
You get a message that and update is available and then you choose a time slot. Next morning you get a message that your systems software has been updated.

I think that Sync3 may be a little behind in the technology.

I also received an update message on ford pass, downloaded one from owners website, but it seems it's the same exact file name on the flash drive that I have already?

I also had the notification of the update in FordPass. I went to the Ford owners’ website and was up able to see an update for my 2018 Raptor. I found the files for the update buried in the Sync 3 info. I downloaded and conducted the install per the instructions. It installed, but it didn’t upgrade me to version 3.4. I still have 3.0, but the speed on Waze does seem to be working better now.

I opened a chat with Ford. They told me that version 3.4 is not available for my truck “currently”. Not sure if they ever intend for it to be updated to 3.4.

Has anyone had success with installing version 3.4 on a 2018 or 2017? Do the instructions from below site work?
