I am baffled by the odd gapping also..

Gapping them is not that hard , be careful and use flat feeler gauges. You checked the new ones with a feeler gauge i assume that is the hardest part and most potential to damage the tip . Adjusting the ground strap for the gap you want is the easiest part.
