Hey there everyone and Happy New Year!

Mods, please let me know if this type of post should go in another forum.

With the current market conditions we are seeing with very limited supplies of new and used vehicles, we have been debating selling our '18 Raptor.

It's a fully loaded SCREW with only 18K miles and a handful of Addons to the bed (line X, OEM bed extender, loading ramps etc etc, Revolver X4 tonneau).

We were shocked when KBB showed $67K-$72K just in trade in value, let alone private party sale values. This seems just crazy, considering this is above MSRP on the truck and nearly above the interest we paid on our loan, so very compelling to sell/trade in.

With Omicron not showing any signs of slowing and microchip shortages continuing to be an issue into 2022, seems like a very optimal time to sell.

However, then we get in the dilemma of what to buy, as this is one of our primary vehicles, and it seems nearly any truck/large SUV has inflated values now.

Has anyone had similar thoughts and any decisions/conclusions reached?

Recently sold my 2018 with 60k miles for $54k I bought new for $63k the msrp was $71k. Highest offer I got was $57k the 3k diffrence was offset in price by tax savings on new vehicle I got. This was in DFW area. You only drive yours 500 miles a month if you need the money sell it, if you don't keep it just my opinion. But yes it will be a pain in the *** to find something else at a "good" deal let alone something better than the raptor.

So, if you have to replace the vehicle, depending on what you’re looking at, you may be better off keeping the Rap.

Sure, you can make good coin selling the Rap in this market, but unless you’ve got your eye on something specific and have a deal in place, things could get complicated.

Yeah, this is kinda where my wife and I are at now as well, even though we would be getting great value right now, zero depreciation and actual appreciation instead, the question remains, what would we actually buy to replace since a new Raptor with same trim/packages will be close to $80K, then anything else that is a larger SUV (Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, Escalade etc etc) has a similar inflated value right now as well.

Just hard to not try to figure out a way to capatilize on 3 years of zero depreciation.

Another thing to consider is that the Raptor traditionally holds value better than other, peasant vehicles. Let’s say you grab an escalade - I’m more of a Navigator type, myself, but to each their own.

What will that escalade be worth 3-5 years down the road? And the Raptor?
They’ll probably be pretty close but the Raptor is going to have a higher floor, and lower depreciation year over year, not to mention you can do pretty much anything with a Raptor.

If you have mods on the truck, you’ll lose $$$ on those, they don’t increase the value of a truck in a linear fashion, if at all. Now, if you were cashing out and going in a different direction, like a super inexpensive commuter, so as to save up for something, then yes, a Raptor sale could make sense under the right circumstances but from what you’re describing you’d need to replace the Raptor with something large, multi-use and reliable. You already have that.
So the question is will it be worth the aggravation of selling, buying and getting something a few model years newer?
Only you can answer that.

As others have noted—the vast majority of car/truck prices are artificially inflated at present.

Case in point as I look at the family vehicles owned by my wife, kids, and I (Raptor, LX570, AEV Jeep Rubicon, 4Runner TRD Pro, Tacoma TRD Pro, 911 Carrera, and Newmarket RV):

1. Raptor is waaaay overvalued.
2. LX570 is waaaay overvalued (no more V8s). I’d say that the Land Cruiser and LX V8s are ridiculously overpriced—as much/more so than Raptors at the moment.
3. AEV Rubicon is only minimally overvalued (as the aftermarket parts didn’t appreciate/don’t add value)
4. Both of our kids’ TRD Pros are as overvalued as the Raptor
5. 911 is collectible thus the price is appreciating vs. being influenced by used car prices.
6. Our RV is actually overvalued, but not as much as our cars/trucks.

@smurfslayer nailed it—in that my Raptor has a higher floor than my wife’s LX or my Jeep. Arguably my kids’ TRDs have an equally high floor—as used 4Runners and Tacomas have historically high resale values.

I agree with Smurf in that unless you are going to buy an inexpensive commuter/standard base model car/truck—you’ll likely find most “nice” vehicles overvalued for quite some time.

Best of luck with your decision!

P.S. With a grimace, the most rapidly depreciating vehicle that we've owned in recent years was my wife’s 2012 Mercedes S550. Thank goodness we bought it used—but still took a bath when trading it for a Lexus. Ouch as I had no idea it would tank that much!

Dump it for sure but what will you replace it with? Id inly suggest a MSRP 22 Rap.
