The car that Mustang fans have been hoping Ford would build for a very, very long time is finally here: the 2012 Boss 302. Dave Pericak, the Mustang chief engineer says it all.

"Boss is a hallowed word around here, and we couldn't put that name on a new Mustang until we were sure everything was in place to make this car a worthy successor. We were either going to do it right or not do it at all - no one on the team was going to let Boss become a sticker and wheel package.

That is just beautiful. Ford is really pleasing the enthusiasts and die hard ford fans.

Forty years after Parnelli Jones won the 1970 Trans-Am season opener in a Ford Mustang Boss 302, the racing legend returned to Laguna Seca, driving the latest iteration of the nameplate he made legendary. "The Boss is back," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas, by way of introduction.

The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 uses a thoroughly reengineered version of the 5.0-liter normally aspirated engine found in the Mustang GT. "You want to know the difference between the track-tested Boss 302R engine and this one?" Dave Pericak, Mustang's chief engineer, asks rhetorically. "Nothing," he answered. Free-flowing intake runners and quad exhaust pipes conspire to produce 440 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.

Pericak would not provide performance estimates other than to say, "The car is wicked fast." Its zero to 60 mph time should be "at least three-tenths of a second quicker than a GT," Pericak says, which would put it in the mid-4-second range. Its top speed will be 155 mph.

Along with extensive engine modifications, the Boss promises better handling than your average 'Stang thanks to a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar, five-position adjustable shocks, stiffer springs and bushings, and standard 19-inch wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tires. Four-piston Brembos provide stopping power, which Pericak claims is "the best braking system ever on a Mustang."

A torque-sensing limited-slip differential and Recaro seats are sold together as the Boss 302's sole option package.

Unless, of course, you consider the Laguna Seca version an option. The baddest Boss of them all is the Boss 302 Laguna Seca, which deletes the rear seats and adds a tubular crossbrace along with the limited slop and Recaro front seats. A unique splitter and rear spoiler also combine to add 90 pounds of downforce at 140 mph, which should keep the Pirelli Corsas glued to the tarmac. The Laguna Seca version is available in black or silver, and will be sold in even more limited numbers than the regular Boss 302s, which are scheduled to hit showrooms in early spring.
