As for the 8 speed, I haven't heard of failures either. The main problem I have is banging when coming to a stop 2-1 downshifts, It randomly lurches forward and sounds like someone hit me from the rear. 5th gear clunks when it's cold. For a $50+K truck this shouldn't happen nevermind a 70+ raptor.

You should check your state's lemon laws as you may very well have a claim against GM. If you reported the issue early on to your dealer, you should speak to a lemon law lawyer to determine your rights.

The 10 speed is great with an MPT transmission tune. I don't like how it shifts stock form...shifting 1-3-5-7 is super annoying b/c with the Ecoboost engine you hit the turbo lag when skipping a gear and that results in a power delay such as when coasting around a corner and wanting to accelerate quickly and merge into traffic. .

Well.....

510 ft lbs of torque mean that it will get you up to speed with no problem. You don't have to drive like Dominic Torretto and live your life 1/4 mile at a time. No need to floor it everywhere you go. Dont be "that guy" in traffic. Plenty of power to hit the merge at speed. If not, step on the go pedal and it will down shift.

The entire point of 10 gears is so they dont HAVE to be used sequentially. The computer is way smarter then you and will make the truck work all in the name of efficiency and driveability.

Definitely a guy who’s never driven a well tuned vehicle w/ an automatic transmission.

If you’ve ever driven a K2 GM vehicle w/ their 8 speed the OP mentioned, you would know that what the factory may tune into the tranny for efficiency & squeezing out some CAFE approved mpg’s in a test setting doesn’t always mesh w/ what is best for that trannies performance OR reliability especially considering different driving habit/styles of individual owners.

Note that mid life cycle of the 8L80e era GM dropped their power train warranty to 60k miles....

Locking & unlocking the TC constantly w/ an 8 or 10 speed tranny For the sake of fuel mileage or “protecting” it may very well be damaging it in real world driving scenarios.

And here I was thinking that 7+3OD gears was to keep me in the power band and allow for optimum gear selection to deliver that 510 pound feet of torque to the ground. ;-)

One of my biggest gripes with the truck is the lazy programming in the impossible to alter default drive mode of normal. I have a late ’16 build Rap, and even though it was held for extra q/a, that as delivered programming would not downshift over 40 mph unless you floored it. Lucille would bitterly cling to a way too high gear worse than Obama and his henchmen clinging to the ‘Benghazi attack was caused by a video’ lie.

I asked twice to get the computer flashed to newer programming and that made it significantly better- more willing to downshift, no having to floor it to compel a downshift, etc.

I’ve also noticed that their “adaptive shift strategy” seems to only be a transient condition, with the strategy gradually migrating back to hold those gears as long as possible even though the driver obviously wants to go faster. I get they want good economy, but I really, really dislike normal drive mode... without a pedal commander.

I have new 2019 Raptor, and I really like the 10 speed, took about 1000 miles for it to break in and program itself to my driving style. and one of the features I really like that doesn't get talked about that much is you can take gears out of the shifting range with ease by using the -/+ button on the shifter. So for example, when you are in normal mode which upshifts quickly when you might be driving slowly around town, you can just modify the shift range to make 6th gear the highest gear vs. going all the way to 10. Curious if anyone else uses this much ?

I don't think I have one. reason is..the first 4 times I brought it in they kept saying they didn't find anything, it's normal, it's the characteristic of the tranny ect.. The 5th time they felt it and said it was SLIGHT. They replaced the Valve body and replaced fluid. It was fine for 110 miles then it started again. It doesn't happen every time I go out, but even if it happens a couple times, that's too much. She tells me if it happens 2 times in 25 miles that's not alot. I said do the math at 25000 miles then. That's a lot! I was told not to bring it back unless it gets worse. Believe this...She said "This was a courtesy repair" I did start bringing it in at 5K and now I have 25K. It doesn't qualify because they had to try to repair it 3 times. They kept telling me it's normal.

Either TC is toast or ring seals 1-2 & 2-3, I know a number of people who say a tune solves the 8 speed issues. On my old G8 GT w/ the 6L80e my tuner was able to “mask” the notorious 2-3 harsh/flare shift that I ended up getting fixed under warranty @ 105k - while tune was still on & after having 75k mixes tuned- they replaced clutch plate kit ring seals 2-3 - turns out ut was a mechanical flaw w/ ring seals on those gears installed in reverse or something like that, but the reason I mention is to point out how much a difference a good trans tune can be, good enough to make up for mechanical flaw in some cases
