10 speed 3rd to 4th/5th shift

I have this issue with the 4th gear. The downshift from 4-3 is worse than the upshift to 5. I can duplicate it pretty much every time I'm slowing down coming to a stop, and it feels like I pressed down on the brake a little too hard to my passengers.

It's going in next week for the roll pin, seat belt, and this issue. I was hoping for a one-day turnaround as the next day I have to drop it off at another shop for them to finish up my light install.

Did the truck at least throw a code or is this going to be one of those, tech could not duplicate issue, please leave scenario?

Having big transmissions issues myself. Took the truck in for the transmission pin recall earlier this week and they found a transmission leak. Apperantly the plastic plug had a crack so fluid leaked out. Got that fixed yesterday....



Today I started my trip from SC to KS for the holidays and I’m 3 hours down the road and my transmision starts to shift down when I accelerate...In gear 10 going 75 MPH. Accelerate to pass a car and the transmission drops to gear 5 and RPMs shoot up then it slowly gets back to gear 10. Truck is bucking. Happened 4 times in 5 minutes.



Now I’m at some dealership in Georgia stranded while the diagnose the truck. This really sucks!!



Has anyone had issues like this??



Same issue here but the bucking was more prominent at lower speeds of 5 - 35 mph. Also, I noticed my truck would hold 8th gear at little longer than usual.

Below is a current status of events leading up to the point where my transmission is currently having out of body experience with the rest of the truck.

I drove from SC to NM last Friday for the holidays. Upon arriving to NM, I took my truck in to Power Ford of Albuquerque for the 1st oil change. 30 minutes in, the service advisor calls me back to show me something. Turns out the transmission was leaking fluid onto the crossmember. As this discovery was made at 6 PM that night, the advisor asked that I bring the truck back in the following morning to have it fully diagnosed. Before leaving the dealership, I had the tech check the transmission fluid level. Luckily, the fluid level was still within the “operating” range.

I returned to the dealership Tuesday morning and left my truck as I awaited it’s fate. I received a call later that afternoon informing me the transmission would have to be removed to determine the source of the leak.

Wednesday, I received confirmation from the service advisor that there was a small crack in the weld of the torque converter where the “housing” of the torque converter meets the opening over the input shaft (forgive my description, see pictures below). As a result, the torque converter was releasing fluid through this small crack during normal operations. The details of the failure were shared with Ford corporate the same day. It turns out, the torque converter is on back order with no ETA.

Thursday, I paid a visit to the dealership to get some things out of the truck and to see if there were any updates out of Ford corporate. Knowing it might be a long shot, I also suggested that perhaps a torque converter could be pulled from the line and expedited to NM. Working in the automotive industry, I know this is possible given the OEM’s motivation to quickly close out a warranty claim.

I plan to call the dealership later this afternoon for a final update going into the weekend. However, I am not at all confident that I will receive my truck in the near future. All of this comes as a let down as NM was only one stop during this expedition that should have also taken me to Colorado & Utah as well.

Side note: Power Ford of Albuquerque, NM has been absolutely great throughout this entire ordeal. The advisors and techs here appear to be motivated to get me and my truck back on the road despite the long lead times out of Ford corporate for a component I assumed would be readily available considering it’s used on every 10 speed transmission.

Details regarding the truck: 2018 SCREW with 6,231 miles at the time of diagnosis. No tunes or other engine modifications.

Tell them to change out the whole transmission. I ran into a guy this summer locally with the 17 Raptor, he told me his trans was completely replaced because the sensor he needed was on back order. The truck developed rough shift at 2500 miles....

Funny you mentioned that... the service advisor called me this afternoon with an update. Ford is attempting to expedite the torque converter. If they aren’t able to make it happen by next Tuesday, the advisor said they would pull a transmission from an F150 on the lot. Here’s to hoping I can just get the new transmission. If it does come down to this, I would like to make sure they full inspect the new unit prior to installation.

I only had it in normal mode when it happened and it freaked me out on interstate. Didn’t want to mess with it so it’s at the dealership. They redid the transmission program and now they are test driving it. Hoping for the best!

Ok, just talked to dealership service department. They said what I experience was normal for that truck. Complete ********. I’ve had that truck for year now and have never experienced this before. They said the truck downshifts during acceleration to save gas. That makes no sense at all.

This happened to me twice today on the climb over the pass. 10th gear, sudden huge clunk, loss of power for a sec, feels like it's in neutral, and then it's back in gear and on my way. Couldn't replicate and dealer said it didn't throw any codes.

I had the almost identical issue. See my post on Raptor issues in this forum.

Essentially I had the roll pin recall completed and took truck home (400 miles) for X-mas. Truck started “bucking” and shifting from 10th to 5th to 7th, etc. I stopped immediately and could see transmission fluid pouring on the interstate.

I limped to nearest dealership who gave me a loaner. They replaced transmission pan gasket again along with seal between transmission and transfer case. I picked the truck up 5 days later and drove about 70 miles before exact thing happened with transmission fluid pouring all over the interstate.

Truck had to be towed to home dealership who did original roll pin recall. They state there is a crack in the transmission case vs fabricated bolts that hold transfer case to transmission, essentially it needs an entire new transmission case. This case does not exist as transmissions are too new for parts.

My dealership is requesting a new transmission and expedited off Ford’s assembly line. I am at week 4 without the truck. They thought at the earliest I could have it back by the end of the week assuming Ford allocates transmission.

If I don’t get it back by next week or Ford says no on allocation I will move forward with Lemon Law since >4 weeks without an appropriate fix. I paid cash for this truck and am willing to eat a few bucks out of spite. I have exactly 10,000 miles on the odometer.

The dealership has been top notch and have me in 2018 Plantinum F150.

'This is my worry. I expect my 1500 mile SCREW will end up with a new transmission at some point. The violent thunk I experienced, delay in power delivery while trying to drive uphill today wasn't "no big deal".

I don't have any experience with this, but some forum members claim you waive your right to the lemon laws if you take a loaner. Might be worth looking into before you get too far into the process.

That’s not quite it; getting a loaner doesn’t always kill a lemon law suit and it varies state to state, however... there are general qualifications to file and be eligible to succeed in a lawsuit. the law may be worded like

... be down for service for more than 30 days, more than 3/4/5 etc. visits for the same or related issue, an issue that severely diminishes the use or fair market value of the vehicle, blah, blah, blah.

some exclusions may apply such as
if a vehicle is provided in place of the purchased vehicle while in service ( a loaner ).

Depending on how the law is worded, you may need to satisfy every qualifier to succeed, but let’s say for example you have a fried PCM (topical).

You drop the truck off for service, you get a loaner. Dealer calls and says ‘national back order on the part, we cannot fix it, no ETA on the part arrival’.

What are you supposed to do? You can’t keep the loaner forever. Even if you have the top of the line ESP, there’s a cap on how many days they pay for, and if it’s dealer provided, that’s likely something they will ask you to return as well. Even so, Ford cannot realistically expect someone to be without a car or truck for an indefinite period of time awaiting repair.

There are limited mechanisms for this. One is, if you finance through Ford, you can suspend payments via the lemon law process until repairs are completed to your satisfaction OR a resolution is reached to the suit. That’s a lawyer discussion, obviously. Note, you cannot simply not pay, it must follow a legal process. However, if you financed outside of Ford, you still have to make the payments regardless. that’s a more complicated situation.

Overarching all of the lemon discussion is the reputation of the manufacturer.
Unfortunately for Sasquatch77 - currently masquerading as MGD, the new Raptor is even more reliable than the old generation for the same age. Nevertheless, if they were to put something into the market with a persistent failure - a big one, the whole model takes a reputation hit. if that happens, so does the manufacturer. If a bunch were to have catastrophic issues, folks would hear about this and start dumping the vehicles at 35,999 miles, value would tank. If during this time or occurrence Ford just unsympathetically told owners “tough cookies, we’re following the law” customers would leave in droves. While the Raptor has no current market place rival, persistent problems and bad customer service will just drive people to other manufacturers.

The Raptor is kind of an odd duck vehicle. It’s not “really” an F150, even though the model is F150. There are a host of unique parts that have proven to be significantly more challenging to procure. As a result, even a simple sensor failure can legally qualify for a lemon lawsuit because Ford has not spooled up available parts! Something is wrong there.

It’s crucial to keep the dealer “on your side”. regardless of their business obligations, you want the whole team to look forward to your visits, even if the visit is you checking on why your truck has been down for 2 months, you want that team thinking ’that guy is always happy and treats us great, no matter how bad things get’ - because that sentiment makes people want to go the extra mile for you. Basically, in this kind of situation you need to be able to sell a drowning man a cup of water.

Another thing I've noticed is that intermittently, I'll start the truck and the gear selection doesn't show up on the dash on the left side. I have to manually press the gear selector button on the shifter to get it to show.
