Depends on how low the level is the tank seams to be well baffled. At a 1/4 tank I have no issues. May want to verify the transmission has the updated programming

It will get better. Mine started at 8mpg lol now it hangs out about 14.8

The oil could be going in the intake, something to do with valve cover seals. Watch the level close. Also not a bad idea to check the transmission (read PITA) mine was 1.5 quart low Good luck
