I have been looking at trailers and wanting one that could go where I go and would pull easily not weigh to much and carry all the little things that don't fit in my truck when we go places. I started back in January and found a trailer on craigslist, "Former Toyota land cruiser owner has trailer for sale".. It was interesting enough to go view it. After a little negotiation we came to a price and since the tire looked shot I told him he has to deliver it to get paid.. A couple days later here it is....So now that I have the trailer what to do ... The previous owner had just installed a new axle with 6 lug hubs setup for 5,000 pounds. Yes overkill for my needs but I figure I would rather have it and not need it so no need to change. Its tear down time and we pulled it apart and looked at the skeleton. Found a few places we could add re-enforcement and set out to do that. I added small areas to store things on the outside of the trailer and added expanding metal so dirt and water would fall through. Re-enforced the tongue of the trailer by adding three pieces of rolled steel tubing together so overall all the sidewall is 1/2 inch thick.. The trailer itself is a cage design and the thin galvanized sheets had to go. I searched for some scrap and used 16 gauge steel sheets to help it and made the walls have an inside and outside with a piece of R12 insulation between the sheets. I added a sheet of galvanized under the trailer and placed 3/4 inch wood flooring in to the bottom. So the trailer now has a tailgate and flip top for easy access and can be locked securely if I am staying at a hotel .... So as I neared completion and wanted things done for the Lost coast run I was missing one key component my tent.. The idea was to find a tent I could mount on the top to get a easy fold tent and I could sleep off the ground,. I found Tepui tents by accident and they are made in Santa Cruz so that's a huge bonus. I drove over picked up the tent. Built a small mount system on the top of the trailer to pace the tent.. Mounted the tent took about 2 hours and I was done.. It folds out quickly sets up in minutes and closes down just as fast. Creates a nice comfortable off the ground sleeping area for the two of us. Now came the real test the lost coast run.. This little thing towed behind me like a champ.. We beat it, bounced, and pulled it through some of the roughest terrain anywhere and it towed no problem... Overall I might change a couple minor things in the future but for now its a winner.... My little mule...
