basically its a trap door.

easy explanation, its a pipe coming off the echaust, with a cover that rotates to close and open.

how do they work?

Cut hole in exhaust pipe before muffler, weld a flap that opens and closes via switch over that hole, and voila!

so then the muffler is just worthless? like not doing anything

well until you close the flap and route the exhaust back through the muffler, yeah.
