There is a rust converter spray. Rust oleum makes it, I think. Ends up looking like black paint.It’s not gonna look like a body panel paint job, but good enough for a truck rear end, unless you are building a show truck

Don't let the dealer touch it. Some dude had his rusted axles painted by the dealer and they sprayed his fox shocks black.

I am in the middle of a ****** situation. I live in the salt belt. I’m not an expert on cathodic protection either. I took my new 18 to the dealer to have undercoating sprayed to protect my new truck. I asked them to spray off the salt and calcium chloride that is spread on the roads here...

Agree. Sandpaper and spray. If you're in the rust belt, the salt will eat through the film and do this each winter. Its a couple hours for cleanup and reprep and you're off to the races for another year.

This stuff is a combination of rust converter and flat black paint. I've used it with good results, it's pricy but works better than regular Rust-Oleum paint, especially when there's lots of rust.

If it was my truck, and the surface was real rough, I would smooth it out with some sand paper for appearance purposes, then paint it. But, either way the rust is converted and covered with a flat black coating.

The axle in the in the picture that started this thread could just be painted as is, the rust paint will fill in most of the small dimples on the surface.

In the rust-belt like IL, I would totally agree. In a dry area like Arizona (where the thread starter's at) ongoing rust is not an issue. Since Fluid Film never dries it gets caked with dust and makes a mess. Convert the rust, cover it with a top coat and it will last for years.

I got lazy but we are talking about the underside of a truck in northern Illinois winters. To say it’s better is a total understatement. Used “rust reformer” and spent maybe 45 min on it.
