Standard 12g is good.

.357 is a classic handgun. I like revolvers. Easy and quick to reload, etc.

.38 special is always a good choice. Soft enough for your wife to use too.

Even if you bought them used you're still stuck having to go thru an FFL and waiting 10 days. On the other hand if you can legally posses a firearm, you can "borrow" a long gun from a friend 30 days at a time. To legally borrow a handgun you'll need a handgun safety cert (but you'll need that anyway before you can buy one).

Keep in mind however if you use a firearm and it's determined you acted criminally somehow, there are heavyweight adders attached if the firearm used isn't registered in your name with the State (most often it matters in misdemeanor crimes that become automatic felonys).

Hope all stayed well and you got some rest dude.

Wow, be safe and take care of your family, stay vigilant

Our family went through something similar back with a neighbor, we were threatened, and had to hire body guards and were told never to walk in front of windows, etc... They guy shoot at our farm hands and aimed a shoot gun at my father and fired right over his head.

In 2005 my father was confronted by the man on the Farm, he came on our property with several of the other mans farm hands. My father ended up shooting and killing him.

He was charged with First degree, but was acquitted in court.

Caused quite a stir around here... Specifically related to "stand your ground"

Point is be safe and protect your loved ones, I am praying things will work out with no incidents.

That is not a good situation---my firearms experience is extensive. If you would like to discuss the matter I would be happy to offer my advice. PM me with a number---this is a rather complicated issue that is better explored via a telecon. You have quite a few options with all having pros and cons. If you are shooting a revolver just as an example, there is the muzzle flash associated with different cartridges as well as the specific (low flash ammunition is offered by some manufacturers) ammunition that is associated with them--at night this can be an issue unless you are used to it.

Trained protection dogs on the other hand do not require a stupid 10 day wait. Our new one arrives this week. He's a Dutch Shepherd trained in protection. Gun shots will not even make him flinch. I love the fact that he is trained to ****** someone off of the property. My wife is going to get him licensed as a service dog. Over the past 6 months we've had the crime getting closer and closer to us. With my precautions, we've only been bothered once (I was out of town). 3 of the 9 houses in my cul-de-sac were robbed that week. The whole point behind the dog is not only for the deterrent factor, but he will give my wife time to grab a gun if need be.

We want to move out of the city now.

im telling her a dog or a gun asap....

how about a dog an an gun not either or . You could also for a small fee hire me if i get let got an i can sit in your garage with my guns an wait for them ,but then again hearing you have a ninja sword an throwing stars they might wish i shot them.:893karatesmiley-thu......in all seriousness weapons are only as dangerous as the people handling them ,i hope your wife gives in an you should go to the range with her an both of you learn to shot the weapon just in case . then i suggest educating your daughters on the weapon of choice so they understand the consequences of mishandling or playing with a gun. Also im not sure if you do ,but security cameras an flood lights w/ motion sensors they work im telling you. Nothing fukes my day up more then when were trying to stealthy ,an tacitly approach a building under cover of dark an a ***** flood light with motion sensors kicks on an makes it day time. The cameras are a huge deterrent most burglars around here are smart an if they see cameras they move right along an dont waste their time for 2 reason : 1 they acknowledge that person is serious about home defense an that means they might be armed or have other measures to keep intruders out....dog ,alarm ,12 gauge.......2 with the cameras out there today the slightes mistake could lead to you being turned in an cameras dont lie what they see is what they see.

lastly if you dont have one get an alarm your tech savoy from what i can tell im sure you could hook up 4 motions flood lights an 4 cameras to a dvr in a day or 2 these things could potentially stop most break ins before they happen ,an for the select few morons who dare enter thats when you break out the 12 gauge an throwing stars.
