here, on frf
good thing is they never came back. the bad thing is im tired as hell, and i have to go volunteer at my daughters school......... on 2 1/2 hours sleep.

for all you gun guys, i am aware of the restrictions and laws here in ca. as well as how these weapons handle and fire. that is why i specifically asked to see if any members had one for sale. unfortunately since we have an HOA i can not do anything to the exterior of the building without approval so cameras will be a pain.

I say go with a good dog like a German shepherd. I have lots of guns and know how to use them very well but there is absolutely no deterrent like a pissed off attack dog. We live in a nice neighborhood but have had 3 attempted break ins ALL 3 have been prevented by my dog, 1 of the 3 she got the guy and put him in the hospital for 8 days and jail after that.

G Gordon Liddy used to say to tell her there will be guns in the house. The question is who does she want to have it - you or the thugs.

Do you worry about your dog with kids? My lab is about 120lbs, but would like you to death or hurt you with his tail, Although, his bark sounds mean, that might be enough...

For a .357 for the home, check out the Ruger SP101 with 4" barrel and fiber optic front sight. I'm getting one as soon as my local shop can find one - took a friend's out & put 5 rounds through 1 elongated hole at 15 yards.

For a 12ga, an 870 is an old standby. But it's tough to beat a Mossberg 590 for the money.

She is incredibly protective of the family. We have 5 nephews that come over all the time and play with her. They pull her tail, poke her in the eye, and climb on top of her, the entire time her tail is wagging and she's licking them.

I travel alot for work and my wife is home alone. It's a great feeling to know my dog is there and would give her life in a second to protect her.

If you do go the gun route definitely stick with a shotgun. There's little skill or aiming needed, just point towards bad guy and squeeze trigger. Everything in front of the gun goes away. Just remember if you live in a residential neighborhood most bullets WILL go through walls!

This is a common misconception. It is not true.

At home defense distances, the shot does not have enough flight time to spread. It exits the muzzle the size of the muzzle, and takes a good 15-20 yards to spread enough to afford being sloppy.

Try this - measure the distance of a long shot in your home - it's probably with about 7 yards. Then take your shotgun to a range with a silhouette target at that distance & look at how much the shot spreads. Even try just being sloppy & pointing in the general direction of your target; then imagine doing that under stress.

For a dog I've had boxers all my life. First one when I was 3, and I was a little $hit. I was mean to that dog & he never did anything toward me but protect me.

I feel better leaving my wife & daughter with our boxer at the house. He's about 70# of solid muscle & really eager to defend us (HATES strangers coming to the house), but tolerates more than you'd believe from our 2 year old.

Wow - glad it didn't escalate and everyone's ok! This thread just refocused me on why I need to get a shotgun. I've been meaning to get one since I had an incident with a creepy stranger a year ago but have been putting it off.

I live in a nice quiet neighborhood but one of my neighbors thinks she's doing a good deed by taking in randoms as some sort of halfway house or rehab of some sort. Usually different suspect looking fools are hanging around out in front of her house. I'm not worried when I'm home but I leave the house every morning about an hour before my wife and the Raptor starting up with cutout open just alerts everyone that I'm gone. Thanks to my two dogs, one German Shepherd and one German Shepherd/Pitbull, I have ZERO worries about my wife being home alone. If you just look at my German Shepherd the wrong way, it's over. I still keep two 12 gauge pump shotties loaded with 00 buckshot handy throughout the house. One upstairs and one downstairs.

It was just a figure of speech. Point being is compared to a handgun if you woken up in the middle of the night and walk throughout your house in the near dark you have a significantly better chance hitting the bad guy with a short barrel 12 gauge with buck shot vs and single shot from a handgun.
