The truck I traded to get my Raptor was an 05 Ram 1500 with the "off-road package" which really didn't amount to much when compared to the new truck. Basically, I could put into 4wd and that was about it. I didn't do much off-roading with it. Mainly just driving to the deer blind, or down to one of the stock tanks to fish. I don't suppose I really needed 4wd, but I promised myself I would never own a truck without it.

Then came the Raptor. Like most of you, I saw this truck and had to have it. However, I am woefully ignorant of all the bells and whistles for off-roading. I've read the manual, and looked over the site, and there is a lot of good information on what the different modes do, but what I want to know is what are they doing FOR me? In what situations do I use the different modes, or is it all trial and error? When answering, don't assume that I know anything. While most of my truck's life will be spent on the pavement, I really want to get this thing dirty, and don't want to look like a jack*ss doing it.

Thanks,
Trig

When ever you get to West Texas give me a shout out.

As for the electrons, there is a very well typed out thread explaining the "off road" switch in conjunction with the 4WD system but you need to do a search. I would but i'm at working pecking on an iPad.

My offroading in the Raptor has been limited to a small mud hole, with some trails, and a decent woops section, and a 30% climb wall. but i have noticed that just hitting the off-road mode button shortens up the throttle response, and does hold the gears out longer(feels kinda weird to me, but i love rowing my own gears) but as for the traction control, i will either leave it engaged or do the long hold and disable (mostly). When i disable it I'm usually going a little faster and wanting to slide around more so, i usually lock out the diff too. but when i'm going slower i usually stay in 2hi w/open diff, may or may not keep the traction on but will stay in off road mode, and switch to 4 or lock out my diff as needed. I hope this provides a little insight. I think it's alot of preference/situation.

OK, I spent some time searching and looking and I can't find that thread. It's one of the most important on the site but I'm giving up. Anyone? Bueller?
