Warning about Whipple tune

Well, this is just craptastic! Generally, I am pretty happy with my Whipple Stage 1 tune, but I am not happy to read this. I would've liked the ability to get back to a fully stock tune if needed. I guess that ship has sailed. I don't like that we can't easily get updates from Ford.

I have been avoiding a custom tune at this time, but have not ruled out a custom tune down the road. That begs the question... what does this mean, if i wanted to move to a custom tune like MPT at a later date??? Would you somehow have to get back to a stock tune first??


Check with Whipple they have an updated tune that include the Ford transmission updates

I believe you would have to get back to a stock tune first before going to another such as MPT, but even if you could go from "stock" Whipple tune to MPT you would still be locked out from getting updates from Ford if you did it this way. Otherwise if you are true stock and get MPT, you can revert to stock to get updates and then pay MPT (I think it is $25) for a new tune based on the updates.

The Whipple tune I installed a few weeks back “fixed” the standard Ford shifting for me. Read... smoother and better timed on both standard and sport mode. With, of course, the added performance of the tune.


18 SCrew Magnetic, Whipple tuned.

Finally am running the latest stock PCM/TCM strategies. Too early to really tell, but initially it feels like it is shifting better.

So Obscure...I've been gone for awhile. Gone from the forums and gone from my truck...dealing with some serious family health issues. Anyway. Just read this entire thread. I bought the Whipple tune as part of the original group buy in Dec 2017. I knew at the time that there were issues with saving factory settings and I delayed installing anything believing that at some point they'd come up with a solution. Figured I was in no hurry to jump in...and I'd let others shake things out. RE: the not being able to save -- I thought that was pretty well understood and communicated...not sure if that was direct from Whipple or from discussions here. My memory is of no help. Anyway...it really doesn't matter.

I'm wondering if you can give a bit more detail on what you said above? As it seems (albeit that it took 3 months) that after 7 pages in this thread...you've now got back to stock strategies?? Well maybe not your stock strategies...but at least the most current ones which I assume are what you wanted. ?? So was this via Whipple? They were able to get things right for you? Are you confident that if Ford makes updates in the future that you will be able to load them? Are your shifting problems sorted out?

Just really trying to understand if all the uproar over Whipple is now nothing? Or where does it stand? And has Whipple jumped into these forums and shared any info?

Sorry for the 20 questions. Like I said...I've been absent. I might get back to my truck by December and would love to know if I should finally unbox my kit. :) Sorry for your headaches. Thanks for sharing what you've learned. Much appreciated.

Whipple worked with me to get back to "true" stock in an unconventional method. I don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes, but I know it was even more of a hassle for them than the normal Whipple "stock" file that people get when they request it. Whether or not I will be able to receive updates from Ford for the TCM/PCM time will tell, but the naming conventions and everything appear correct and not designated as a Whipple one as with their "stock" files they pass out.

There is no bad blood between Whipple and I, but I felt it was best to no longer run a Whipple tune and having to worry about being able to get updates as well as reverting back to stock whenever I wanted. It is just a shame their hands are tied by Ford with this as it is Ford, not Whipple, that doesn't want users to be able to swap back and forth like you can with other tuners. For a product created with the help of Ford, it just didn't give me the warm fuzzy that they would treat it any different than any other tune regarding warranty issues knowing the aforementioned.

As far as the shifting issues, they were a bit better with the last tune I ran, but I also felt like the truck wasn't nearly as quick as the first tune I received from them. The stock tune I am currently running shifts noticeably smoother with my truck.

Anyways, YMMV, but I have a 2019 on order and at this point do not think I will run a tune on it.

just updating this, im currently experiencing the same thing,
long on hold phone calls with whipple, trying to get stock files, numerous tickets opened and emails sent.

no one ever disclosed that it would be difficult to get back to stock, update from dealer and such, this is deceiving for customers, plus awful customer service, im gonna switch to mpt ontop of the whipple, garbage company

This is one of the reasons I decided to go with the JDM tune instead of the Whipple. Seems like a BS arrangement engineered by Ford to cover their own butts and screw the customer. Also, JDM tune appears to be better/stronger from what I have read. I also like JDM’s responsiveness here on the forum and better customer service reputation. You are taking your chances in warranty either way and my limited interaction with Whipple when I was researching tunes was not good and did not inspire confidence at all.

And you are correct, I just flashed mpt 93prx tune and not looking back. They're acting like a bunch of amateurs

not being able to go back to your original stock tune without sending your computer to whipple is a shocker when you find out .
