Installing an ICOM 5021 I got from Trepal. Instead of direct wiring to battery, I was thinking of using one of my aux switches. That way it could not be left on by accident and leave me stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

Would this be good enough?

I went right to the battery, I don't think it draws that much when your not transmitting, I have left it on all night and it won't kill the battery. I have mine in the glove box so I always forget to turn it off. I'm adding an ilumated switch on the dash somewhere tomorrow I'll try and post some pictures when I'm done. I like being able to use the radio when the truck is off. I use it as a public safety radio so I have to have it on for hours while I shut down a road or crime scene. I can't let the truck run for that long.

We wire our gps and VHF off the battery. That way you can sit on the side of the road and talk with other rigs, and work on nav issues without having the truck running. Of course the down side is you have to remember to turn it off.
