We’re trying to decide if we should drive up Friday night rather than making the 3.5-4 hr drive from Atlanta the morning of.

You could stay in Columbia, TN. Hotels there are fairly inexpensive, it's relatively far enough from Nashville that there should be availability, and it's pretty close to the trail.

I just booked a hotel in Franklin. Hotels looked slightly nicer than what is offered in Columbia.
